Kay J. “Jody” Simpson

Kay J. “Jody” Simpson of West Monroe, La., formerly of Ashland, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, in Glenwood Regional Medical Center.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in West Monroe. She was an administrative assistant with Care Solutions and a volunteer with Angel Ministries, where she worked diligently for autism awareness and the new research with bariatric chambers. She was a member of the American Business Women’s Association.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jay and Pauline Blackburn, and a brother, Paul Blackburn.

Survivors include her sons, Craig Simpson and wife Heather and Jay Simpson and wife Angela; six grandchildren, Tyler, Keeley, Maggie, Oakley, Chandler and Victoria Simpson; two sisters, Rosemary Hale and Elizabeth “Cricket” Hensel; a brother, Henry Blackburn; her mother-in-law, Mrs. Edna Simpson; her sister-in-law, Cathy Blackburn; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Thursday at Feazel Chapel of First Baptist Church in West Monroe by the Rev. Mark Fenn. Interment will be in Kilpatrick Serenity Gardens in West Monroe under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home in West Monroe, La.

Visitation was from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers were Jason Nelson, Tyler Simpson, Drexel Simpson, James Monk, Jason Howell and Adam Wilbanks.

Memorials may be sent to Angel Ministries for autism awareness.

Carl Henderson Riggle Jr.

Carl Henderson Riggle Jr., husband of Mary Riggle of Ashland, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, following an extended illness.

Carl was born Sept. 2, 1927, in Ashland, to the late Carl and Lois Holmes Riggle Sr. Carl proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy and retired from Armco Steel as a brick mason. He was a member of the United Steel Workers Union, Poage Lodge 325, F&AM;, Ashland Elks Lodge 350, the Ashland Bowling Hall of Fame and the Kentucky State Bowling Hall of Fame. He was a member Kentucky Baptist Builders, helping build churches in depressed areas, and was a deacon at Pollard Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Riggle, and four sisters, Phyllis Hayner, Joan Riggle, Virginia Lee and Mary Lou Keffer.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Margaret Conley Riggle of Ashland; a son, Jeffrey Scott Riggle of Waverly, Ohio; a daughter, Marcia Harris and her husband, Dan, of Somerset; a sister, Marlene Wheeler and her husband, Butch, of Springhill, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Chris Harris and Wade Riggle.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, by Pastor J.R. Hume at Pollard Baptist Church in Ashland. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland. A Masonic service will be at 6 p.m. Sunday at the church by members and brothers of Poage Lodge 324, F&AM.; Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood and an hour before services Monday at the church.

Carl Prichard Burke (1937-2009)

Carl Prichard Burke, 72, of Catlettsburg, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009.

He was born Feb. 14, 1937, in Buchanan, a son of the late John and Mamie Powell Burke. He was a laborer for Ross Brothers Construction Co. and a member of Buchanan Chapel United Methodist Church and Laborers Local 1445.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Edna Mae Brazell; two brothers, Donald Burke and Raymond Powell; and an aunt and uncle, Sadie and Dee Powell, who raised him.

Survivors include his loving wife of 47 years, Deloris Jean Woods Burke; a sister, Betty Riddle of Harlem, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Community Hospice, the Buchanan Chapel Church Building Fund or the Lawrence County Humane Society.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009, at Buchanan Chapel Cemetery by the Rev. Keith Workman.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Young Funeral Home in Louisa.



Millard F. Billups Jr. (1936-2009)

Millard F. Billups Jr., 73, of Greenup, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell.

Mr. Billups was born March 29, 1936, in Ashland, a son of the late Millard Filmore and Garnet Hurst Billups.

He was a retired foreman at Leets Home Center in Portsmouth and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Nannie Lee Howard Billups; a brother, Lloyd C. Billups; a sister, Helen Howard; and a grandson, Estille Keith Craft.

He is survived by three daughters, Gail (Roger) Owens of Lloyd, Jackie (Joe) Miles of Grayson and Debbie (Willie) Craft of Lloyd; a son, Lawrence Keith (Georgia) Bays of Lloyd; a sister, Murriel Jean Allen of Lloyd; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009, at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup by Brother Carl Collier and the Rev. Kenneth Martin. Burial will be in Howard Cemetery on Slash Branch.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today and an hour before services Sunday at the funeral home.



Gary Napier (1949-2009)

Gary Lee Napier, 60, of Ashland, died Wednesday at his residence.

Mr. Napier was born June 24, 1949, in Ashland.

He is survived by his wife, Cindy Laird Napier.

Dorothy Young

Dorothy Young, 92, of Aiken, S.C., formerly of Ashland, died Wednesday in Harbor Chase Medical Center in Aiken.

Randy Brock

Randy Brock, 55, of Ashland, died Thursday at his residence.

His wife, Johnnie Brock, survives.

Darrell Fannin (1935-2009)

William Darrell Fannin, 74, of Catlettsburg, died Wednesday at his residence.

His wife, Garnet Robinette Fannin, survives.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home in Catlettsburg. Burial will be in Robinette Cemetery on Whites Creek.

Eric Baier

Eric Baier, 63, of Grayson, died Thursday in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby Baier.

Marie McNeely

Marie McNeely, 89, of Ashland, died Friday in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.

Sarah Margaret Prater

Sarah Margaret Prater, 78, of Volga, died Thursday in Lexington.

Her husband, James Prater, survives.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Sunday at Fishtrap United Baptist Church in Staffordsville. Burial will be in Prater Cemetery at Volga.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Paintsville Funeral Home and after 10 a.m. Sunday at the church.



Shirley Kay Bennett

Shirley Kay Bennett, 54, of Garrison, died Monday in Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, Ohio.

Mrs. Bennett was born July 12, 1955. Her husband, Bruce Bennett, survives.

A memorial service will be at the convenience of the family. Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg is in charge of arrangements.



Eugene “Blue” Jones (1940-2009)

Eugene “Blue” Jones, 69, of Clearfield, died Thursday.

Mr. Jones was born Aug. 1, 1940.

Edith Edna Dillon Trent (1919-2009)

Edith Edna Dillon Trent, 90, of Clearfield, died Wednesday in Ridgeway Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Trent was born Sept. 19, 1919.

Infant Chloe Michelle Blair

Chloe Michelle Blair, 1-day-old daughter of Megan #Blair, died Thursday in Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington, W.Va.

Burial will be at 12:15 p.m. today at Blair Cemetery in Oil Springs.

Ariyan Ariyan, 61, of South Point, died Tuesday at his residence.

He is survived by his wife, Alice Miller.

Curtis Edward Rogers (1926-2009)

Curtis Edward Rogers, 83, of Ironton, died Wednesday at a local health care center.

Mr. Rogers was born Nov. 28, 1926, and is survived by his wife, Loretta Evans Rogers.

Larry Dale Stoots Sr., 59, of Scottown, died Thursday in Hospice of Huntington in West Virginia.

Mr. Stoots was born March 29, 1950.
