Dorothy L. Young - 1917-2009

Dorothy L. Young, 92, of Aiken, S.C., formerly of Holden, W.Va., died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, in Aiken.

Mrs. Young was born Feb. 2, 1917, in Naples, a daughter of the late William and Carrie Ann Morman McCalvin. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Preston P. Young Jr.

She was a homemaker and a member of Holden Community Methodist Church, a former Garden Club president, a Girl Scout leader, a church treasurer, a Sunday school teacher, a member of choir, a graduate of Logan High School and played basketball, was a former captain and ran track.

She is survived by three brothers, Billy Joe McCalvin of Ashland, Ralph McCalvin of Tennessee and Robert Lee McCalvin of Nevada; two sisters, Grace McCalvin of Ashland and Louise Feagans of Aiken; nieces Pam Graves, Debbie Dukes and Carrie Ann McCalvin; nephew Bruce McCalvin; and great-nephew Zachary Buckner.

Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum by the Rev. Richard Suman. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel.

Karen Bowling Prichard - 1944-2009

Karen Bowling Prichard, 65, of Catlettsburg, passed away Saturday morning, Dec. 26, 2009, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.

Mrs. Prichard was born April 24, 1944, in Ashland, a daughter of the late William Russell and Sadie Robinette Bowling. Her husband of 38 years, Timothy Prichard, died in February 2000. She was a clerk for the Catlettsburg Stock Sale for many years and a dedicated homemaker.

Survivors include two sons, Jeffrey D. Prichard of Lloyd, Keith M. Prichard and his wife, Dee, of Kitts Hill, Ohio; a daughter Kim Myers and her husband, Michael, of Lloyd; and a brother, Bill R. Bowling and his wife, Leah, of Catlettsburg; and two grandchildren, Katie Marie Myers, 8, and Nicholas Paul Myers, 7.

Karen was also preceded in death by a brother, Harold Lee Bowling, and a sister-in-law, Sue Bowling.

A funeral service to honor Mrs. Karen Prichard will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home in Catlettsburg. A message of hope and inspiration will be offered by the Rev. John Moore.

Final rest will be in Pine Haven Cemetery on Bolts Fork in Rush.

Calling hours for family and friends will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.



Charlotte Lou “Patty” Reed - 1931-2009

On Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009, Charlotte Lou “Patty” Reed slipped away from Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland. She joined her loved ones who have gone on before her — her husband, Charles Glen “Chuck” Reed, daughter Sandra Lou “Sandy” Davis (her husband Mike survives), her parents, Charles and Lula Craft, a brother Charles Edward Craft (his wife Helen survives) and sisters Eunice Werner, Helen Bowling and Lois Carr.

Patty was born May 13, 1931, in Greenup County and resided in Worthington. She was the loving mother of Nancy (Glenn) Stephenson and Glenda (Jim) Bailey.

She is also survived by her sister, Linna Craft, and brothers David (Wilma) and Steve (Evon) Craft. She was “Granny Patty” to Pete (Angie) Davis, Matthew (Katie) Davis, McRae (Chris) Stephenson Pennington, Jami Bailey (Chuck), Dustin (Emily) Stephenson and Chelsey Stephenson and her fiancé, Bill Brammell.

Her great-grandsons, Corey and Jordan Davis, Dylan Pierce, Ayden Davis, Jonah Pennington and great-granddaughter Mia Stephenson were also cherished.

Many special nephews and nieces have treasured memories of her.

Open house Sunday dinners were Patty’s specialty for family and friends from near and far, where you were always told, “Just come if you can; you know there will be plenty” (and there always was).

For 37 years, Patty was employed at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital, working in various departments. She volunteered there after her retirement in 1997, still known for her cheerful attitude, winning smile and helping hands.

All services will be at Evans Funeral Home in Raceland. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today and the funeral will be the following day, Wednesday, at noon. She will lie in state from 11 a.m. until service time.

The funeral service will be officiated by her son-in-law, Glenn Stephenson, and her longtime pastor and friend, Wayne Kuhner. Ron Reed will share special memories of Aunt Patty.

Graveside services will follow at Brick Union Cemetery in Lloyd.

Betty L. Crum - 1931-2009

Betty L. Crum, 78, of Greenup, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.

Mrs. Crum was born Aug. 19, 1931, in Pike County, a daughter of the late Algie and Hattie Brooks Stith. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband of 49 years, Frank Crum; a sister, Loretta Stith; and two brothers, Chester Stith and Russ Stith.

She was a former employee of Gallaher’s in Ironton, a former manager for Jerry’s Drive Inn in Greenup, a former route manager for the Greenup News, a Kentucky colonel and of the Baptist faith. She was a homemaker.

Surviving are three daughters, Sharon (Stanley) Harris of Argillite, Sue (Norman) Archie of Raceland and Kathy (Tony) Fultz of Greenup; two sons, Dale (Patty) Crum of Greenup and Randy Crum of Rush; four sisters, Judy Fitzpatrick of Columbus, Dovetta Kouns and Ernestine Barker, both of Flatwoods, and Carol Allen of Ironton; four brothers, Jack Stith of Wurtland, Ray Stith of Point Pleasant, W.Va., John Litteral of Ashland and Ken Stith of Flatwoods; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Friends may call after 11 a.m. Thursday at Evans Funeral Home in Raceland. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday by Brother Denver Woods at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Crum Family Cemetery in Greenup.



Juanita M. King Colegrove - 1925-2009

Juanita M. King Colegrove, 84, of Grayson, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009, in Carter Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Colegrove was born June 6, 1925, in Carter County, a daughter of the late John and Edna Pope King. She was a homemaker, loving mother and of the Pentecostal Faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Colegrove; two brothers, Clayton King and Vernon King; and a sister, Oretha Hall.

She is survived by two sons, James (Judy) Colegrove of Hartford City, Ind., and Russell (Sharon) Colegrove of Fort Wayne, Ind.; a daughter, Sue (Dennis) Paul of Marion, Ind.; a brother, Phillip King of Dade City, Fla.; two sisters, Bernice Hall of Olive Hill and Dixie Charnley of Hartford City; a granddaughter, Jennifer; and a great-granddaughter, Mackenzie.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson by Ronald Knox. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Olive Hill.

Gail Ball - 1948-2009

Gail Bolton Ball of Mount Orab, beloved wife of Thomas Ball; loving mother of Allison Lee Ball of Mount Orab, Lisa Lynn (Tim) Barry of Finneytown and T.J. Ball (Megan Miller) of Mount Orab; dear sister of Gloria Hunt of Ashland; caring aunt of Melanie Tolliver of Raceland and Harry Craig Hunt of Ashland; affectionate great-aunt of Josie Tolliver of Raceland, Justin Tolliver of Raceland and Hayden Hunt of Ashland, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2009, at the age of 61.

Mrs. Ball was preceded in death by her parents, James Paul and Wanda (nee Stone) Bolton.

She was a member of Mount Orab Church of Christ, where she was baptized on March 7, 1975. She worked at New Beginnings Child Care Center for more than 13 years.

A memorial service was Dec. 14, 2009, at Mount Orab Church of Christ, 400 Smith Ave., Mount Orab, OH 45154.

Gary Lee Napier - 1949-2009

Gary Lee Napier, 60, of Ashland, died Wednesday.

Mr. Napier was born June 24, 1949, and is survived by his wife, Cynthia L. Laird Napier.

A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Neal Funeral Home in Catlettsburg.



Dr. Loren Ledford

Dr. Loren Ledford, 42, of Ashland, died Monday in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

His wife, Amy, survives.

Autie Ray Adkins, 69, of Greenup, died Saturday at his residence.

Mr. Adkins was born May 23, 1940.

Susie Alice Aldridge, 58, of Greenup, died Sundeay at the residence of her brother.

Mrs. Aldridge was born March 4, 1951, and was the widow of Roy Roger Aldridge.
