Dr. Loren James Ledford - 1967-2009

Loren James Ledford, 42, of Ashland, died Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center following a brief illness.

He was born April 23, 1967, in Beaufort, S.C., to the late William Ledford and Janice Brown Ledford. He was also preceded in death by his beloved grandparents, B.B. and Alberta Brown, and his grandmother, Laura Ledford Seeber.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his loving wife of 15 years, Amy Jones Ledford; a precious son, Preston Allen Ledford; and an adoring daughter, Bethany Nicole Ledford. Additional survivors include Aunt and Uncle Barbara and Paul Thomas, Aunt Wilma Brown, Aunt Jane Salyers and Aunt Ann McConnell. Important family members were his pets Bert and Scooter.

He established Ledford Family Care and was a member of First United Methodist Church. Above all he was a devoted husband, father and son. He was a caring doctor to thousands of patients. He was team physician to the Ashland Tomcats and a mentor to many medical students. He was passionate about everything he undertook.

Many of his medical honors include staff member of the University of Louisville, the University of Kentucky, Marshall University and Morehead medical schools; ACTC Distinguished Alumnus Award and “Outstanding Man” 1986-87; AMA Physicians Recognition Award; Northeast Kentucky Area Health Education Center Preceptor of the Year; American Academy of Family Physicians; member of the Ashland Area Health Alliance; the Kentucky Boxing and Wrestling Authority; Certificate of License and American Board of Family Practice Diplomat.

Funeral services honoring Loren will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, at First United Methodist Church by Dr. Floyd Paris.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Thomas, Steve Gilmore, Ian Holbrook, Dr. Brian VanHoose, John Robert Miller, John Vincent and Andrew Wheeler.

Giving memorials will be Dr. Mary Reams, Dr. Garner Robinson, David Greene, Andrew Greene, Charlie Reliford and Ted Paluch.

Entombment will be in Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 10 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Christopher Branham - 1984-2009

Christopher David Branham, 25, passed away Dec. 5 in Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, Tenn., after a five-year battle with leukemia. He was born Sept. 20, 1984, in Ashland.

Surviving are his mother, Kimberly Scott Branham of Clarksville, Tenn.; his father and stepmother, John and Karen Branham of Louisa; a sister and brother-in-law, Amanda and Ronnie; two nephews, Kaden and Chad Howerton of Clarksville; a brother, Johnathan (Scotty) Branham; a stepsister, Jessicah; a brother-in-law, J.R.; a nephew, Gavin Wells of Louisa; his paternal grandmother, Mary Lou Pauley of Louisa; uncles Bobby, Jim, David, Mac and Carlos Branham; an aunt, Brenda Pack; maternal “Pap,” Kenneth Scott of Wurtland; aunt and uncle Vicki and Mark Yeager; uncle and aunt Kenneth and Melonie Scott of Greenup County; and many cousins and great-uncles and great-aunts, all who will miss him.

He was preceded in death by his “nan,” Joan Cumpton Scott.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Abundant Life United Pentecostal Church on Bellefonte Road in Raceland by the Rev. Anthony Keeton.

Family and friends are welcome to attend.



Steven H. Dyer

After much thought and prayer, I would like to write this letter on behalf of the maternal family of Steven “Stevie” H. Dyer, who went to be with our Lord on Dec. 15, 2009.

This part of his family was not mentioned in his obituary. They are heartbroken and grief-stricken by this tragic loss. Therefore It is only proper to extend to them the same respect and acknowledgement as those listed in the newspaper.

Stevie’s wife, Tabitha Lowe Dyer’s grandparents, Tim and Patty Lewis of Olive hill, Ky., as well as numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins. Mother Ava Browning Hall and husband, David R. Hall, both of Greenup; stepbrother and sister, David R. Hall II and Shawna Hall Bocook, both of Ashland; grandfather, the late Kenneth Tague of Ashland; grandmother, Mary Steve Tague of Ironville; uncles and aunts, Gary and Crystal Browning of Zanesville, Ohio; Jeff and Tammy Taylor and their six children of Grayson; Craig and Connie Tague Clemens of Raleigh, N.C.; Jennifer Elswick of Ashland; Brian and Karry Tague of Ashland; Stevie’s uncle Brian, also served as pallbearer; cousins, Joey and Dylan “Jake” Hall; Lakyn Marie and Blake Browning; Austin Hurley and Anna Tague; and not mentioned are many other family members as well.

I extend my upmost respect, condolences and prayers to all. May God bless this family, give them strength and keep them safe in his loving arms.

Charlotte Lou “Patty” Reed - 1931-2009

On Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009, Charlotte Lou “Patty” Reed slipped away from Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland. She joined her loved ones who have gone on before her — her husband, Charles Glen “Chuck” Reed, daughter Sandra Lou “Sandy” Davis (her husband Mike survives), her parents Charles and Lula Craft, brother Charles Edward Craft (his wife Helen survives), and sisters Eunice Werner, Helen Bowling and Lois Carr.

Patty was born May 13, 1931, in Greenup County, and resided in Worthington. She was the loving mother of Nancy (Glenn) Stephenson and Glenda (Jim) Bailey. She is also survived by her sister, Linna Craft, and brothers David (Wilma) and Steve (Evon) Craft. She was “Granny Patty” to Pete (Angie) Davis, Matthew (Katie) Davis, McRae (Chris) Stephenson Pennington, Jami Bailey, Charles Wade Bailey, Dustin (Emily) Stephenson, Chelsey Stephenson and Chelsey’s fiancé, Bill Brammell. Her great-grandsons, Corey and Jordan Davis, Dylan Pierce, Ayden Davis, Jonah Pennington and great-granddaughter Mia Stephenson were also cherished. Many special nephews and nieces have treasured memories of her.

Open house Sunday dinners were Patty’s specialty for family and friends from near and far, where you were always told, “Just come if you can; you know there will be plenty” (and there always was).

For 37 years, Patty was employed at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital, working in various departments. She volunteered there after her retirement in 1997, still known for her cheerful attitude, winning smile and helping hands.

All services will be at Evans Funeral Home in Raceland. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today and the funeral will be the following day, Wednesday, at noon. She will lie in state from 11 a.m. until service time. The funeral service will be officiated by her son-in-law, Glenn Stephenson, and her longtime pastor and friend, Wayne Kuhner. Ron Reed will share special memories of Aunt Patty. Graveside services will follow at Brick Union Cemetery in Lloyd.

Wanda Clark - 1929-2009

Wanda M. Miller Clark, 80, of Raceland, passed away Monday Dec. 28, 2009, in Cabell-Huntington Hospital in Huntington.

She was born Sept. 11, 1929, in Greenup, a daughter of the late William and Lillian Pruitt Miller Sr. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Phillip Wayne Clark, in 1979.

Mrs. Clark was a cafeteria worker for Campbell Elementary and a member and former officer of the Raceland Woman’s Club.

She is survived by three daughters; Cindy (Tony) Howard of Raceland, Julie Moore of Ashland and Lisa (Rick) Stephens of Greenup; five grandchildren, Jennifer Howard Haslinger of Columbus, Phillip Moore of Ashland and Haley, Makayla and Colton Stephens, all of Greenup; a sister, Thelma (Hubert) Stephenson of Greenup; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be a private service for the family by Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods.

Jerry Yates - 1955-2009

Jerry Lambert Yates, 54, of Willard, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009, at his residence.

He was born June 9, 1955, in Grayson, a son of Catherine Yates Thomas of Willard and the late Ray Thomas. He was employed by Kentucky Electric Steel in the melt shop and was a member of Willard Missionary Baptist Church and United Steel Workers 7054.

He was also preceded by a son, Shannon Yates.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Bonnie Bowen Yates; a son, Jerry Dale and Heather Yates of Grayson; a sister, Diane Uhlmann of Webbville; three brothers, Gary Yates of Grayson, Zane Bush of Webbville and Donnie Thomas of Willard; and two grandsons, Nathan Yates and Ethan Yates.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson by minister Ronnie Graves. Burial will be in East Carter County Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Martha Wooten - 1919-2009

Martha Wooten, 90, of Albany, Ohio, formerly of Catlettsburg, has died.

She was born Oct. 20, 1919, in Catlettsburg.

Her husband, Adam Wooten Jr., preceded her in death.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Bigony-Jordan Funeral Home in Albany. Burial will be in Athens Memorial Gardens.

Hansel Danner - 1940-2009

Hansel Danner, 68, of Dayton, formerly of Olive Hill died Friday at his residence.

He was born June 25, 1940, in Carter County.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Oney-Henderson Funeral Home in Olive Hill. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery in Olive Hill.

Gail Brown

Gail Brown, widow of Bob Brown, died Tuesday in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

Clell Ramey - 1933-2009

Clell Ramey, 76, of Sitka, died Monday in Paul B. Hall Medical Center in Paintsville.

He was born Aug. 2, 1933 in Johnson County.

His wife, Martha Hayden Ramey, preceded him in death.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Jones-Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville. Burial will be in Lakeview Memorial Cemetery in Staffordsville.

Francis Lutz - 1928-2009

Francis Cantrell McKenzie Lutz of Grove City, Ohio, died Monday at his residence.

She was born April 25, 1928, in Johnson County.

Her husband, John Lutz, survives.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Flatgap Baptist Church. Burial will be in Johnson County Memorial Cemetery in Staffordsville.

Glen R. Markins - 1939-2009

Glen R. Markins, 70, of Coal Grove, died Monday in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.

He was born Sept. 25, 1939, in Lyra.

His wife, Loretta Carpenter Markins, preceded him in death.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Phillips Funeral Home in Ironton by Pastor Billy Markins. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, with military graveside rites by VFW Post 8850 of Ironton.

Shirley Lee Bowman West, 72, of Columbus, died Friday in Community Hospice Care Center.

She was born Feb. 18, 1937, in Lawrence County.

Her husband, Leonard “Peck” West Jr., survives.
