Dr. Loren James Ledford - 1967-2009

Loren James Ledford, 42, of Ashland, died Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center following a brief illness.

He was born April 23, 1967, in Beaufort, S.C., to the late William Ledford and Janice Brown Ledford. He was also preceded in death by his beloved grandparents, B.B. and Alberta Brown, and his grandmother, Laura Ledford Seeber.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his loving wife of 15 years, Amy Jones Ledford; a precious son, Preston Allen Ledford; and an adoring daughter, Bethany Nicole Ledford. Additional survivors include Aunt and Uncle Barbara and Paul Thomas, Aunt Wilma Brown, Aunt Jane Salyers, Aunt Ann McConnell; and a sister-in-law, Cammy Myers and husband Ralph. Important family members were his pets Bert and Scooter.

He established Ledford Family Care and was a member of First United Methodist Church. Above all he was a devoted husband, father and son. He was a caring doctor to thousands of patients. He was team physician to the Ashland Tomcats and a mentor to many medical students. He was passionate about everything he undertook.

Many of his medical honors include staff member of the University of Louisville, the University of Kentucky, Marshall University and Morehead medical schools; ACTC Distinguished Alumnus Award and “Outstanding Man” 1986-87; AMA Physicians Recognition Award; Northeast Kentucky Area Health Education Center Preceptor of the Year; American Academy of Family Physicians; member of the Ashland Area Health Alliance; the Kentucky Boxing and Wrestling Authority; Certificate of License and American Board of Family Practice Diplomat.

Funeral services honoring Loren will be at 11 a.m. today, Dec. 31, 2009, at First United Methodist Church by Dr. Floyd Paris.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Thomas, Steve Gilmore, Ian Holbrook, Dr. Brian VanHoose, John Robert Miller, John Vincent, Andrew Wheeler and Rob Francis.

Giving memorials will be Dr. Mary Reams, Dr. Garner Robinson, David Greene, Andrew Greene, Charlie Reliford and Ted Paluch.

Entombment will be in Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum.

Visitation was from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and will continue after 10 a.m. today at the church.

David Scott Shea Moore - 1959-2009

David Scott Shea Moore, 50, of Louisville, formerly of Ashland, passed away Friday, Dec. 25, 2009, at his home in Louisville, following a short battle with renal cell cancer.

He was born Oct. 8, 1959, in Ashland, a son of the late Delbert C. and Grace Price Moore.

He was a self-employed carpenter, an avid model railroader, carpenter and architectural scale model builder and enjoyed time with family and his canine companions.

He is survived by his fiancée and caregiver, Jamie Turner of Louisville; his stepmother, Louella Moore of Ashland; three dogs, Red, Rusty and Cody; a stepsister, Brenda (James) McCown of Rush; two stepbrothers, Darrell Chaffins of Summit and Jimmy (Sharon) Chaffins of Grayson; and his lifelong friends, Joe Broughton, Jere Gilpin, Kip Noe, John Mason, James Riffe, John Vincent and others.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood by Chaplain Jimm Smedley.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and an hour before services Sunday at the funeral home.



Gail Brown - 1936-2009

Gail Preston Brown, 73, of Grayson, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

She was born April 29, 1936, in Raysal, W.Va., a daughter of the late Golden and Iva Green Preston. She was a former nurse with the Carter County Health Department and the proprietor of Horton Bros. & Brown and Hallmark. She was a member of Grayson First Church of Christ.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert P. Brown, in 2005, and a sister, Gwen Marsh.

Survivors include two sons, Frank and Joan Brown of Washington, N.C., and Bill Brown of Sykesville, Md.; a brother, Edward and Elsie Preston of Frankfort; and a grandson, Brandon Crawford.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 2, 2010, at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson by David Williams, minister. Burial will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Keyon ‘Dre James Thomas

Infant Keyon ’Dre James Thomas was stillborn Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2009, in St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.

He was the son of Larry Thomas and Christina Mayhone of Olive Hill.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Sherry Mayhone, and his paternal grandmother, Fannie Thomas.

Survivors, in addition to his parents include a brother, Jay-Von Canady of Olive Hill; a sister, Mykia Canady of Olive Hill; his paternal grandfather, Larry Thomas of Dayton, Ohio; and many other family members who will sadly miss him.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, at Garvin Ridge Cemetery in Olive Hill by Brother Gayle Price.

Oney-Henderson Funeral Home in Olive Hill is in charge of arrangements.



Patricia Lewis - 1940-2009

Patricia Ann Adkins Lewis, 69, of Isonville, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

She was born April 4, 1940, in Elliott County, the daughter of the late Guy and Juanita Flannery Adkins.

Patty worked for the Elliott County Board of Education for more than 20 years with many different titles. She was a homemaker and a member of Full Gospel Community Church.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Danny William Lewis.

She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Dariel Lewis; two children, Timothy Dwight Lewis of Sandy Hook and Penny Dawn and husband Johnny Ray Greene of Bruin; three grandsons, Jason Lee and wife Rachelle Stevens of Sandy Hook, Nathan Daniel Lewis of Sandy Hook and Joshua Ray Greene of Bruin; two great-grandchildren, Shelby Rae and Sheldon Kash Stevens; a brother, Roy Glen Adkins of Catlettsburg; and a host of friends and loved ones who will sadly miss her.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, at Lewis & Ferguson Funeral Home in Sandy Hook by Brother Richard Lewis Jr. Burial will be in Elliott County Memory Gardens.

Lesia Crisp-Roberts - 1961-2009

Lesia Irene Crisp-Roberts, 48, of Ashland, died Tuesday at her parents’ home in Blaine.

She was born March 31, 1961, in Delaware, Ohio.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Neal Funeral Home in Catlettsburg. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.

Edna Allen, 74, of Greenup, died Wednesday in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

Irene Johnson - 1928-2009

Irene Epperheart Johnson, 81, of Lawton, died Wednesday in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

She was born Jan. 28, 1928, in Carter County.

Marvin Wade Gibson, 76, of Wayland, died Wednesday in the East Kentucky Veterans Center.

His wife, Avalon Gibson, preceded him in death.

Shirley Kay Bennett - 1955-2009

Shirley Kay Bennett, 54, of Garrison, died Monday in Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, Ohio.

She was born July 12, 1955, in Portsmouth.

Her husband, Bruce Bennett, survives.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Garrison First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Collier Memorial Gardens in South Portsmouth.
