Janet Bond (1916-2010)

Janet K. Bond of Ashland passed away Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, in Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility in Ashland.

Mrs. Bond was born Jan. 31, 1916, in Ansonville, Pa., the daughter of the late John and Anna Oleson Clark.

Janet leaves behind her faithful husband of 58 years, Milford Bond; a son, John, and his wife, Sue, of Ashland; and three cherished grandchildren, Chris, Kim and Emily. Also surviving are a brother, William Clark of Ansonville; and several nieces and nephews.

Also preceding her in death were three sisters, Christen, Betty and Alice, and three brothers, Aaron, John and Robert.

Janet was a graduate of the Clearfield PA School of Nursing and St. Francis Hospital School of Anesthesia. She served our great nation with honor during World War II as a nurse in Army hospitals in England and France. She received two battle stars in the MASH unit during the Korean War.

A funeral service will be observed at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, at Neal Funeral Home on Center Street in Catlettsburg. Pastor Lee Gussler will deliver a message of hope and inspiration. Final rest will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Those wishing to call on the Bond family may do so tonight between the hours of 6 and 8 at the funeral home.



Jo Dianne (Robertson) Himes (1942-2010)

Jo Dianne (Robertson) Himes, 67, of Ashland, died Jan. 1, 2010, in St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va.

She was born Feb. 24, 1942, in Peru, Ind., to the late Hubert Edgar Robertson and Mable (Derringer) Robertson Zdonek.

Ms. Himes was a self-employed beautician for several years in the Ashland, Ky., area.

She is survived by three children, Terry Dean Himes of Portland, Ore., Sherry and Tim McKnight of Pocahontas, Ill., and Kathy and William Ross of Columbus, Ohio; and a daughter-in-law, Donna Himes of Ashland. Other survivors include brothers and sisters Janet Richmond, Doris Judy, Ed Robertson, Jack Robertson, Kay Eckelbarger, Dean Robertson, Jimmy Robertson, Jeanne Robertson and Jane Wood; grandchildren Samantha Borders, Nicole Stevens, Krystal Kimbler, Stephanie McKnight, T.J. McKnight, Alyssa Himes and Landon Himes; four great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Steve Himes; two sisters, Sharon Powell and Dot Bailey; and a brother, Dave Robertson.

A memorial service will be at a later date at Calvary Cemetery in Ashland, with inurnment to follow.

The family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1320 Bath Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.

David Jay Stender (1925-2010)

David Jay Stender died on Jan. 4, 2010.

He was born in Huntington, W.Va., on Aug. 27, 1925, formerly of Woodbury, Minn., son of the late Edward and Ethel Scaggs Stender. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Patricia Jean Pratt.

Surviving are two daughters, Jean Sims and husband Donald and Kelley Stender; two grandchildren, Michael Sroga and Amanda Sims-Wolf and husband Robert J.; two great-grandchildren, Cameron Sims and Alex Wolf; a close relative, Marie “Peg” Stender; and a special friend, Carol Vadnais.

As a sixth-grader at Harveytown Elementary School, his favorite Bible verse was the 23rd Psalm and he was influenced by his teacher, Mr. Dawson. He was a Huntington High School athlete.

David served in the Navy two years during World War II. He was a proud graduate of Marshall University and played minor league baseball in which he pitched several no-hit games.

After graduation, he was a longtime employee of Ashland Oil, where he had a moving and working career. He lived in Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky and Minnesota and returned to Ashland as a vice president of trading. During retirement, he enjoyed Bible study, studying master gardening, delivering Meals on Wheels, playing cards at Ashland Elks Lodge 350, traveling on cruises and Florida trips.

He had several pine trees planted near the Ashland Central Park fountain as a living legacy to his family. His investment advice, entertaining stories and quick wit will be sorely missed.

Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers to the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society or Disabled American Veterans.

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8, 2010, at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland with Father John Noe officiating and a eulogy by Jim Fout. Entombment will be in Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum.

Visitation will be after 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Teresa Louise Adams Williams (1965-2010)

Teresa Louise Adams Williams was born June 17, 1965, in King’s Daughters Hospital in Ashland, Ky. She slipped her bonds to this Earth on Jan. 1, 2010, in St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville, Tenn.

Teresa was the second of three children born to rockabilly and gospel music recording artist and minister Willie Murray “Billy” Adams, and his wife, Freda Louise Riffe Adams. Teresa grew up in Flatwoods and went to school in nearby Russell. As a child, she was a member of the Ashland and Wurtland Churches of God. By family accounts, Teresa was a very happy and beautiful child with a kind, supportive big heart. As she grew, she became a skilled cook, following in the footsteps of her mother and Grandmother Riffe. She also embraced her father’s love for music and loved to read.

On Dec. 18, 2004, Teresa married Bobby Williams in Flatwoods, Ky. At the time of her death, the happy couple resided in Petersburg, Tenn., and she was a member of The Word Church in Lewisburg, Tenn., which is pastored by her father.

She is survived by her husband, Bobby; a stepdaughter, Amanda Williams; her father, Billy; sisters Tina Adams and Janetta Blevins; her brother-in-law, Kelly Blevins; a niece, Hannah Grace Blevins; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charles and Dorothy Williams; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Sheila and David Morris, Marilyn and Bill Webb, Cathy and Randy Meeks, Phyllis and Jerry Meadows and Vickie and Tommy Stone; and several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her mother, Freda, and three children lost during pregnancies.

Visitation will from 6 to 9 p.m. today, Jan. 5 at Carman Funeral Home, 2301 Argillite Road, Flatwoods. The funeral service officiated by the Rev. Dave Hickerson and the Rev. Steve Hickerson will be at the same location at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6.

She will be laid to rest in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods, Ky.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Williams, Jackie Crane, Kelly Blevins, Larry Grubb, Clif Doyal and Kevin Hickerson.



Joe “Jr.” Reffett (1955-2010)

Joe “Jr.” Reffett, 54, of Smith Branch Road, Greenup, formerly of Laurel Road, Greenup, passed away Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, at his home.

Mr. Reffett was born June 19, 1955, in Ashland, Ky., a son of the late Joe and Ella Thornsbury Reffett.

Mr. Reffett was a farmer and of the Baptist faith.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Lena Zahn.

He is survived by a son, Joeseph Kyle (Kayla) Reffett Jr. of Greenup, Ky.; a daughter, Betty Jo Reffett of Ironton, Ohio; a brother, Delmar (Pam) Reffett of Oldtown, Ky.; two grandchildren, Chase Reffett and Ella Kay Reffett; a special friend who was more like a sister, Sandra Floyd of Oldtown, Ky.; and special friends and caregivers Larry and Mary Walker of Greenup, Ky.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, at Emmanual Missionary Baptist Church in Oldtown by Pastor John Lybrook. Burial will be in Reffett Cemetery on Laurel Road in Oldtown.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup and an hour before services Wednesday at the church.



Clyda Everman Matthew (1950-2010)

Clyda Everman Matthew, 59, of Hazard, Ky., formerly of Grayson, Ky., passed away Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, in Hazard Appalachian Regional Hospital.

She was born Jan. 6, 1950, on Everman’s Creek in Grayson, a daughter of the late Clyde and Gladys Everman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Dr. William Henry Matthew.

She was a graduate of Prichard High School in 1968 and Lab Technical School and was a lab technician at the Grayson Clinic for many years until disabled by MS.

Her survivors include two daughters, Kelly Baker of Knoxville, Tenn., and Suzanne Kayser of Jonesborough, Tenn.; a son, Jeremy Baker of Jonesborough; a brother, Randall Everman of Grayson; a sister, Justine Baker of Grayson; and two grandsons, Luke and Ian Kayser of Jonesborough.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson by the Rev. Jim Harris and Pastor Jack Carter. Burial will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery.

Penny Rogers

Penny C. Lewis Rogers, 48, of West Liberty, died Thursday in Hyden.

Her husband, Billy Rogers, survives.

The funeral was at 1 p.m. Saturday at Herald & Stewart & Halsey Funeral Home in West Liberty. Burial was in Cox Cemetery at Zag.



James Campbell

James David Campbell, 63, of Stanville, husband of Emily Campbell, died Sunday in Pikeville Methodist Hospital.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hall Funeral Home in Martin. Burial will be in Davidson Memorial Gardens at Ivel.



Paul Canterbury (1948-2010)

Paul E. Canterbury, 61, of Louisa, died Sunday in Huntington Veterans Administration Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 11, 1948, in Louisa.

His wife, Bonnie Tarring Canterbury, survives.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Meades Branch Freewill Baptist Church. Burial will be in Bryant Cemetery at Charley.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. today and until time of services Thursday at the church.

Tim Thurman (1959-2010)

Tim Ray Thurman, 50, of Vanceburg, died Friday in the Hospice of Southern Ohio Medical Center.

He was born May 5, 1959, in Lansing, Mich.

His wife, Velva Hobbs Thurman, survives.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Burial will be in Thurman Family Cemetery on Rock Run.

Friends may call after 8 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.



Lola Chandler (1921-2010)

Lola Faye Young Chandler, 88, of River, died Saturday in the Heartland of Bellfountain Nursing Home.

She was born Dec. 23, 1921, in Johnson County.

Her husband, Overy Oakley Chandler, died in 1995.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Preston Family Funeral Home in Paintsville. Burial will be in Marvin Sparks Cemetery.

Peggy Stephenson (1923-2010)

Peggy L. Stephenson, 86, of Barboursville, died Sunday in Cabell Huntington Hospital.

She was born May 23, 1923, in Huntington.

Her husband, Robert E. Stephenson, died in 1978.

A private graveside service will be at Ashland Cemetery.

Jeffery Bowen (1972-2010)

Jeffery Allen Bowen, 37, of Fort Gay, died Saturday in Fort Gay.

He was born March 23, 1972, in Louisa, Ky.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at New Friendship United Baptist Church. Burial will be in Bowen-Sammons Cemetery on Yellow Creek.

Friends may call after 3 p.m. today at the church.
