Florine Wright - 1912-2010

ASHLAND — Florine Wright, 98, of Ashland, Ky., died Wednesday evening, July 27, 2010, in Kingsbrook Lifecare Center.

She was born Feb. 12, 1912, in Goodwater, Okla., a daughter of the late Andrew Jackson and Bessie Pearl Sullivan Flowers.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Sidney Wright, who died on May 27, 1988.

She was a devoted homemaker, a member of Rose Hill Baptist Church and a 30-year member of YMCA. She played professional basketball for two oil companies during the 1930s beginning with Root Refining Co. in Eldorado, Ark., and then Globe Oil in McPherson, Kan.

Surviving are a son, E.M. “Earl” Wright of Frankfort, Ky.; sisters Lela Mixon of Oklahoma and Mildred Bowmen of Texas; grandchildren the Rev. Brian (Kim) Wright, Sally Maxwell and Leigh Ann (Kirk) Brink; great-grandchildren Kristina Wright, Steven Maxwell and Morgan Brink; and great-great-grandchild James Maxwell.

A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 30, 2010, at Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland by her grandson, the Rev. Brian Wright, and the Rev. Charles E. Stewart. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to Rose Hill Baptist Church, 1001 Winslow Road, Ashland, KY 41102 or the YMCA, 3232 Old 13th St., Ashland, KY 41102.
