Doris Lee Speck - 1926-2013

ASHLAND — Doris Lee Speck, 87, of Ashland, passed away in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland on March 4, 2013.  

She was born Jan. 26, 1926, at Leach, to the late Solomon and Gussie Frasher Nicholas.                

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Speck, in 1980; a brother, Ralph “Nick” Nicholas; a special niece, Gail Benedict; and a great-grandson, Aiden Stricklin.

Doris was a 1944 graduate of Ashland High School and was a store manager for Fannin Glass & Paint Co. from 1944 to 1987, and worked for a year for Baldridge Glass Co. before retiring. She was a faithful member of Christ United Methodist Church. Doris bowled from 1959 to 2009 at Blue Ribbon Lanes and is a Hall of Fame member. She was a member of the undefeated Ashland Bombers softball team and was an avid genealogist who did extensive research of eastern Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia.           

She is survived by her son, Gregory Alan Speck; a special friend, Melinda Bagby of Louisville; two grandchildren, Nathan Speck and wife Brandi of Lexington and Laura Emmons of Georgetown; great-grandchildren Riley Speck, Asa Emmons and Bonnie Speck; a special niece, Nickie Barnard and husband Pete of Daingerfield, Texas; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 9, 2013, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel by the Rev. Michael McAlister. Burial will be in Harmon Cemetery.  

Friends may call after 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
