Ruth T. Martin

Ruth (Thomas) Martin, of Ashland, Ky., died while in the care of Hospice of Cincinnati on Jan. 14, 2010.

She was preceded in death by her late husband, Edgar Martin; her brother, Harold F. Thomas; and her sisters, Mildred Warnock and Evelyn Edgell. She was the daughter of the late Nettie Adams and Bernard Thomas. She was 87 years old.

She is survived by six nephews, Charles F. McMullin (Anne), Jerry Warnock (Carla), Bob McMullin (Linda), Gary McMullin (Joyce), James Bernard Thomas (Avra), and Dale Thomas; and three nieces, Karen Lee (Richard), Carlyne Gullett (Ralph), and Ruth Ann Warnock. She was grandmother to four grandchildren, Tim Martin (Shelly), Tammy Dills (Alan), Eddie Martin (Trina) and Melinda Martin. She is also survived by several great-grandchildren and great-nieces and nephews as well as great-great-nieces and nephews.

She retired from Sears Roebuck & Co. and was a member of First United Methodist Church. She was a dedicated and loving caregiver to her mother, Nettie Adams and her husband, Eddie Martin. Ruth was described as a feisty, very strong-willed woman, who always spoke her mind. She was a great cook and special aunt and grandmother to her family. She spent most of her life in Ashland. When her health began to fail, she moved to Cincinnati in 1999 to be close to family.

A committal memorial service will be at noon, Tuesday, Jan. 19 at Rose Hill Mausoleum.

Dalbert, Woodruff and Isenogle Funeral Home in Cincinnati is in charge of arrangments.



Charles Cooley - 1939-2010

Charles Vernon Cooley, 70, of Darlington, S.C., formerly of Catlettsburg passed away Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010, following an extended illness.

Charles was born Aug. 27, 1939, in Vanceburg, Ky., to the late Edward Lee and Sarah Katherine Stewart Cooley.

He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army National Guard and was a retired truck driver with Ard Trucking Co. in Darlington. He was a member of Southside Freewill Baptist Church in Darlington.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Charles Edward Cooley.

Survivors include his loving wife, Beatrice Bailey Cooley of Darlington; seven sons, Danny Bailey and his wife, Sugar of Chattanooga, Tenn., Richard “Tinker” Carroway of Catlettsburg, Sean Oliver Pert of Darlington, Paul Milton Cooley and his wife, Tracey of Darlington, Timothy Cooley of Catlettsburg, Charles Blair Cooley and his wife, Anna of Darlington, and Paul Sean Cooley of Indianapolis, Ind.; two brothers, Larry Edward Cooley and his wife, Dreama and Virgil Milton Cooley and his wife, Kathy, all of Catlettsburg; one sister, Judy Mae Jankowski and her husband, Richard of Catlettsburg; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010, at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood by Pastor Carter Dale Henson. Burial will follow in Warner Cemetery in Catlettsburg.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.



James W. “Bud” Stewart - 1936-2010

James W. “Bud” Stewart, 73, of Columbus, passed away Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010, in Doctors West Hospital.

He was born June 28, 1936, in Denton, Ky., a son of the late Balis and Gladys Cartwright Stewart.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Christ.

He was a 50 year-member of Masonic Lodge #626 of Willard, Ky., a Kentucky colonel and retired from Sygma Network after 19 years of service.

Bud is survived by his wife, Gwelda “Ann” Whitt Stewart; sons, Jay (Cheryl) Stewart of Frankfort, Ohio, and Jon Stewart of Columbus, Ohio; brother, William “Cy” (Janie) Stewart of Point Pleasant, W.Va.; grandchildren, Jason Stewart of West Jefferson, Ohio, Matthew (Ashley) Stewart of Newton, N.C., David Stewart of Maiden, N.C. and Jessica Marie Stewart of Maiden, N.C.; brother-in-law, Frank Christ of Louisville, Ky.; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, at Malone Funeral Home, 325 Malone Lane, Grayson, Ky.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010, at the funeral home. Interment will be in East Carter County Memory Gardens.

Stella W. DeBorde - 1919-2010

Stella W. DeBorde, 90, of Chillicothe, died at 2:28 p.m. Jan. 12, 2010, in Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Sarasota, Fla.

She was born April 26, 1919, in Louisa, Ky., to the late Morda and Golda Wilson. On Sept. 25, 1940, she married Woodrow DeBorde, who preceded her in death on Aug. 12, 2003.

Surviving are her daughters, Sharon Cunningham of Sarasota, Jackie DeBorde and her friend, Donnie Schroeder of Circleville and North Port, Fla., and Sandy (Kit) Bucy of Chillicothe; four grandchildren, Missie (Tom) Madru of Frankfort, Ohio, Clay (Kim) Bucy of Kettering, Ohio, Angie Bucy of New Hope, Pa. and Richard (Kristen) Cunningham of Bradenton, Fla.; five great-grandchildren, Mitchell Madru, Andrea and Noah Bucy, and Beau and Brock Cunningham; a brother, Joe Wilson of Mount Dora, Fla.; three sisters, Clara Vagnier (Marvin Kipp) of Mount Dora, Fla., Jesse Johnson of Ashville, Ohio, and Doris (Norman) Braughton of Columbus, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Stella had worked at the former US Shoe Corp. and retired from Sears where she worked in the catalog sales department. She was a former member of Belles & Beaus Square Dance Club.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 18 at Haller Funeral Home with the Rev. Dan Ramey officiating. Graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Monday in Greenlawn Cemetery in Louisa under the direction of Wilson Funeral Home in Louisa.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Haller Funeral Home.

Anita Castle - 1933-2010

Anita Lou Castle, 76, of Forestdale, Ohio, went to be with her Lord Jesus Christ Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010, in King’s Daughters Medical Center surrounded by her loving family.

Anita was born June 30, 1933, in Ashland, Ky., daughter of the late Lewis Leroy Sr. and Inez Ream. She was married Jan. 24, 1953, to Walter Ray Castle, her loving husband of 56 years.

She was a 1951 graduate of Coal Grove High School, Ironton Beauty College and Jackson Vocational School. She was formerly employed by Cinderella Dress Factory, and Wilson Sporting Goods and a member of Etna Baptist Church.

Anita was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was an avid reader, enjoyed working with crafts and loved spending time with her grandchildren; great-grandchildren and her special companion, Ginger.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Lewis Leroy Ream; two sisters, Phyllis Willis and Vivian Colley; grandson, Norman Hicks Castle and two daughters-in-law, Phyllis Castle and Vicki Wiley Castle.

She is survived by her husband, Ray; five children, Ray Castle Jr. and wife, Debbie, Terry Leigh Castle, Kevin Eugene Castle, all of Ironton, Gary Bryan Castle of Flatwoods, Ky., and daughter, Ranita Lou Mullens and husband, Tim of Ironton; 10 grandchildren, Steven, Timothy, Brandon, Bryan, Jeremy, Rachel, Russell Lee, Ernie (Junior), Jeremiah, and Bobby Joe; and 10 great-grandchildren, Jordan, Jasmine, Charles, Andrew, Aubrey, Tanner, Tristan, Haley, Cody and Joshua.

Funeral services will be at noon Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, at O’Keefe-Baker Funeral Home in Ironton with the Rev. Jim Beals officiating. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Gardens in South Point, Ohio.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 17 at the funeral home.



Anthony “Tony” Green - 1953-2010

Anthony “Tony” Green, formerly of Ashland, died Thursday in St. Louis, Mo.

He was born Feb. 25, 1953, in California.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

The funeral and burial will be in St. Louis.

Sarah Kilburn, 72, died Friday in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

Helen Stephens, 72, of Winchester, formerly of Ashland, died Friday in Cape Canaveral, Fla.

Mary Walton - 1924-2010

Mary J. Walton, 85, of Ashland, died Jan. 5.

She was born Feb. 10, 1924 in Huntington, W.Va.

Her husband, George Walton Jr., preceded her in death.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Ashland Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Dorothy Frances Foote, 94, of Merritt Island, Fla., died Friday.

She was born Oct. 6, 1915, in Wilks Barre, Pa.

John Henry Sparks, 82, of Olive Hill, died Thursday in Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington, W.Va.

He was born Nov. 24, 1927, in Carter County.

His wife, Maxine Jane Whitt Sparks, survives.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill. Burial will be in Ross Chapel Cemetery in Olive Hill.

Ieda Hall Lemaster, 74, of Soldier, died Wednesday in St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.

She was born April 26, 1935.
