Gladys White Staten (1918-2010)

Gladys White Staten, 91, of Ashland, Ky., died Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010, at her residence.

She was born Aug. 18, 1918, in Rush, Ky., the daughter of the late William and Rachel Hicks White. She was the former manager of the cafeteria at Charles Russell Elementary School and manager of the concession stands at Ashland Central Park.

She was a member of Gospel Tabernacle and attended Little Mary Old Regular Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon L. Staten Sr.

Survivors include three sons, Gordon Staten Jr. and wife Dorothy of Falmouth, Ky., David L. Staten and wife Ruth of Lexington, Ky., and William F. Staten and wife Alice of Rush; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010, at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland by William F. Staten. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

The family will receive friends after 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.



Helen Jean Stephens (1937-2010)

Helen Jean Stephens, 72, of Winchester, Ky., formerly of Ashland, died Jan. 15, 2010, in Cape Canaveral Hospital in Florida.

She was born Feb. 21, 1937, in Boyd County, Ky., a daughter of the late Bennie and Dorothy Howe Robinson.

She was a retired teacher with the Ashland Public School District and a member of First Baptist Church of Ashland and the Winchester Homemakers Club.

Surviving are her loving husband of 54 years, Walter R. Stephens Jr. of Winchester; a son, Walter R. Stephens III and wife Tammy of Winchester; daughters Jane Walker and husband Mark of Georgetown, Ky., Beth Sligh and husband Chris of Winchester and Joanna Clarke and husband Bram of Winchester; a sister, Phyllis McIntyre of Ashland, Ky.; grandchildren Tyler, Chelsea, Amy, Taylor, Jett, Jennifer, Julianna and Wilson; and several nieces, nephews and extended family.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010, at Ashland Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel by the Rev. Jim Nichols, with a eulogy by Chris Sligh.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today, Jan. 19, 2010, at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland.

Lawrence “Mac” McNabb (1926-2010)

Lawrence “Mac” Mc-Nabb, 83, of Westwood, Ky., husband of Betty Wilson McNabb, died Saturday morning, Jan. 16, 2010, in Community Hospice Care Center following an extended illness.

Mac was born Sept. 22, 1926, in Copper Hill, Tenn., a son of the late Herbert Clyde and Azza Wilma Hatchet McNabb.

He was retired from the Carpenters Local 472 of Ashland, Ky., and a former civil engineer with the Tennessee Valley Authority and the U.S. Corps of Engineers. Mac was a World War II veteran and a member of Bellview Community Methodist Church in North Carolina and faithfully attended Fairview Baptist Church. He was a member of Poage Lodge 325, F&AM;, and was past president of the Westwood Lions Club. He was a Kentucky colonel.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a son, Mitch McNabb and wife Kathy of Westwood; a daughter, Sallie Murphy and husband Terry of Ashland; three granddaughters, Amanda Marie McNabb and fiancé Jessie Parton, Lindsay Leigh Armstrong and husband Matt and Allison Michelle McNabb and fiancé Ron Fisher; and two great-grandchildren, Alaina Marie Parton and Elijah Cash Armstrong.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010, at Fairview Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael Rice.

Arrangements are under the direction of Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland.

Jean Stigler (1930-2010)

Delores Jean Shropshire Stigler, 79, of Catlettsburg, went home to be with the Lord on Monday morning, Jan. 18, 2010, at her residence.

Mrs. Stigler was born June 4, 1930, in Prestonsburg, Ky., daughter of the late Luscious A. “Sonny” and Katherine Mellon Shropshire. She attended Thomas R. Brown High School and was a member of Catlettsburg United Methodist Church. Jean loved flowers and most of all her furry friend, “Babe the cat” Stigler.

She leaves behind a nephew, John M. Stigler and his wife, Belinda, of Ironton, Ohio, several cousins and many faithful friends .

Her loving husband of 55 years, Frank Stigler, passed away in 2003. Also preceding her in death was a daughter, Connie Lee Stigler, and a brother, Tommy Goodin.

A funeral service for Mrs. Jean Stigler will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010, at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home on Panola Street in Catlettsburg. Pastor Steve Mays will officiate the service. Final rest will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland, Ky.

Visitation for family and friends will be after 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

The Stigler family graciously requests contributions be made in Jean’s memory to Community Hospice, 1538 Central Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.



Charlene Adams (1933-2010)

Charlene Bowling Adams, 76, of Whites Creek Road, Catlettsburg, passed away Sunday evening, Jan. 17, 2010, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

Mrs. Adams was born Feb. 21, 1933, in Catlettsburg, Ky., a daughter of the late James Lawrence and AnnaBelle Fannin Bowling. She was a dedicated rural homemaker and attended Whites Creek United Methodist Church. Charlene enjoyed attending United Methodist Ladies meetings and time spent with family and friends.

Also preceding her in death was her husband, Isaac “Bucky” Adams, in 2000.

Charlene is survived by her two loving children — a son, Paul R. Adams and his wife, Brenda, of Catlettsburg, and LaDonna J. Runyon and her husband, Jack Jr., of St. Augustine, Fla.; a sister, Mary Katherine Wright of Catlettsburg; seven grandchildren, Jessica (Ryan) Adams of Jeremiah, Ky., Mary (William) Adams of Ironton, Ohio, Anna Adams of Henderson, Ky., Bethany Adams of Catlettsburg, Adam (Sara) Brown of Seamans, Ohio, Amanda Brown of Ashland and Kasi Runyon of Somerset, Ky.; and five great-grandchildren, Katlyn Jewel, Kensley Dawne, Albert Hunter, Isaac Nicholas and Joseph Harley.

A funeral service to honor Mrs. Charlene Adams will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010, at Neal Funeral Home on Center Street in Catlettsburg. Pastor Gary Sparks will deliver a message of comfort and inspiration. Final rest will be in Fannin Cemetery on Bear Creek.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.



John “Jack” Fugeman (1914-2010)

John H. “Jack” Fugeman, 95, of Ashland, died Wednesday in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

He was born May 24, 1914.

Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland is in charge of arrangements, which are pending.

Betty Flannery, 80, of Ashland, died Monday in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

Michael Dean Conley, 67, of Ashland, died Saturday at his residence.

He was born June 3, 1942, in Johnson County.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland. Burial will be in Conley Cemetery in Johnson County.

Donna Callahan (1961-2010)

Donna Callahan, 48, of Ashland, died Sunday at her residence.

She was born May 11, 1961, in Ashland.

Her husband, John Callahan, survives.

Rosa Lee Starks, 87, of Ashland, died Friday in Wurtland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Aug. 19, 1922, in Shelbyville.

Her husband, Everett Starks, preceded her in death.

Emily Louise Spurlock, 25, died Sunday in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

She was born May 27, 1984.

William “Billy” McCray (1978-2010)

William “Billy” James McCray, 31, of Firebrick, died Monday from injuries he received in a truck-train accident in Firebrick.

He was born Feb. 24, 1978, in Michigan.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore. Burial will be in Firebrick Cemetery.

The Rev. Gordon Monroe McCoy, 69, died Sunday.

He was born March 9, 1940, in Buchannan, Va.

His wife, Donna Bellomy McCoy, survives.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Fallsburg Tabernacle. Burial will be in McCoy Family Cemetery in Fallsburg.

Lassia Crisp (1917-2010)

Lassia Isaac Crisp, 92, of Martin, died Sunday in St. Joseph Hospital in Martin.

She was born Dec. 20, 1917, in Weeksbury.

Her husband, Columbus Crisp, preceded her in death.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Hall Funeral Home in Martin. Burial will be in May Cemetery in Martin.



Don Mabry (1935-2010)

Don Albert Mabry, 74, of Elliott County, died Sunday in St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington.

He was born Nov. 5, 1935.

His wife, Mary Adkins Mabry, survives.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead. Burial will be in East Carter County Memory Gardens in Grayson.

Billie Fairchild, 75, of Staffordsville, died Sunday in St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va.

His wife, Gertrude Curtis Fairchild, survives.
