Charles Elwood Sloas - 1926-2012

FLATWOODS — Charles Elwood Sloas, 86, of Flatwoods, departed this life on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012, to be with his Heavenly Father while at home. Charles suffered numerous health issues, but faced each of them with amazing courage and resilience.

Mr. Sloas was born in Ashland on April 13, 1926, to the late George and Goldie Picklesimer-Sloas.

Charles wore many hats during his lifetime and was respected by all who knew him. He was an avid outdoorsman and a model for several outdoor publications. He was a Christian and a member of Flatwoods First Baptist Church. During World War II, he served as a member of the Office of Strategic Service. He worked as a police officer for the City of Ashland and a deputy sheriff in Greenup County before starting his career with the C&O Railroad. During his time at the railroad, he was an emergency medical technician in the Flatwoods area. He also taught many medical classes for the vocational school and was instrumental in the formation of Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital’s Emergency Room. He was also a good friend and contributor to the Greenup County Library System. Charlie was on the founding board of the Flatwoods Volunteer Fire Department and was a longtime member of the department. He served the FIVCO Area Development District and the Eastern Greenup County Emergency Ambulance Tax Board, was a charter member of the Flatwoods Lions Club and was affiliated with local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts camps where he taught first aid. Mr. Sloas also proudly served the citizens of Flatwoods as a city councilman for 18 years. He was an honorary Kentucky colonel and Admiral of the Waterways.

Besides his mother and father, he was preceded in death by two wives, Beulah Rice-Sloas and Edith Sallie-Sloas; four brothers, his twin Alfred Elmo Sloas, William Sloas, James Sloas and George Sloas Jr.; and two sisters, Mary Cathrine Sloas and Nancy Alley, as well as an infant sibling, Baby Sloas.

He will be sadly missed, but will remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him forever, including his caring wife, Roseann Winters-Sloas of Flatwoods; two sons, Charles Kevin Sloas and his wife, Kathryn, and Kelly Joseph Sloas and his wife, Michelle, all of Flatwoods; one daughter in marriage, Michelle Leigh Timberlake-Bass and her husband, Harry; four grandchildren whom he cherished, Courtney Nicole Sloas, MacKenzie Jayne Sloas, Megan Rachelle Bass and Chase Stanton Bass; and three sisters Delores Ashley of Ashland, Frances Anderson of Louisa and Linda Bilyeu of Kansas City, Mo.

Funeral services will be at Flatwoods First Baptist Church, 1206 Bluegrass St., on Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.

Visitation will be today, Nov. 1, 2012, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods and one hour prior to service time at the church.
