John Nicholas Ryan, DMD - 1918-2012

LOUISA — John Nicholas Ryan, DMD, 93, of Louisa, passed away Monday, Sept. 17, 2012 in Three Rivers Medical Center in Louisa.

Dr. Ryan was born Oct. 24, 1918, in Louisa, the son of Charles C. and Mary Waldeck Ryan. He was a dentist and former Louisa High School teacher. He was a member of the Louisa United Methodist Church (considered to be the oldest living member) and taught Sunday school for more than 50 years. During WWII, he was part of the Army Air Corps and was a trained air traffic controller. He received his undergraduate degree from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va., in 1942 and graduated from the University of Louisville College of Dentistry in 1952. He was a long time member of the Kentucky Historical Society, and the Kentucky Civil War Round Table and was a life member of the NRA. He served two terms as Lawrence County coroner and was president of the Kentucky Coroners Association. He was also a member of the National and International Medical Examiners Association.

Surviving are his wife, Valeria Roberts Ryan of Louisa; one son, John Richard Ryan (Norma) of Lexington; one stepson, Alfred B. Murray (Rose Marie) of Fort Gay, W.Va.; one grandson, Richard Morgan Ryan (Danielle) of Charleston, W.Va.; one granddaughter, Dr. Elaine DeSario (David) of Louisa; one great-grandson, Alex DeSario of Louisa; one stepgreat-grandson, Jacob Young of Charleston, W.Va.; and one stepgreat-granddaughter, Morgan Young of Charleston, W.Va.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, 2012 at Young Funeral Home Chapel in Louisa with the Rev. Donna Aros officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012 from 4 to 9 p.m. Burial will be in Pinehill Cemetery in Louisa.

In lieu of flowers, friends and family may make a donation to the Louisa United Methodist Church, First United Methodist Church or the Alzheimer’s Association.
