James H. Melvin - 1917-2012

ASHLAND — James H. Melvin, 94, of Ashland, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012, in Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility.

He was born Dec. 11, 1917, in Chinnville in Greenup County, the son of the late James R. and Rica Farson Melvin.

He was an insurance agent with the State Farm Co. with 49 years of service. He was a graduate of Morehead State University, a World War II U.S. Navy veteran who attained the rank of lietenant commander, a member of First United Methodist Church, past potentate of El Hasa Shrine, a member of Poage Masonic Lodge 325, F&AM, a past president of the Ashland Kiwanis Club, a member of Ashland Elks Lodge 350 and a past secretary of the Greenup County Fair.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Iva Hamon Melvin, and a sister, Minnie Mae Hofflich.

Survivors include two sons, James Melvin Jr. and wife Paulette and Paul Melvin and wife Anna of Ashland; a sister, Ester Hinsey of Perryberg, Ohio; seven grandchildren, James Melvin III, Jason Melvin, Christopher Melvin, Kevin Melvin, Mark Melvin, Jeffrey Melvin and Amy Middlebrooks; three great-grandchildren, Logan Melvin, Andrew Melvin and Isaac Melvin; and six stepgrandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, 2012, at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland by the Rev. John Street. Entombment will be in Rose Hill Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends after 11:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral Home.
