Ralph Calvin Davis - 1925-2010

Ralph Calvin Davis, 84, of Decatur, Ga., formerly of Ashland, Ky., and Baton Rouge, La., died Wednesday morning, March 10, 2010 at his residence.

He was born July 19, 1925, to John Elmer Davis and Mary Virginia Brown in Wheelersburg, Ohio. He graduated from Wheelersburg High School in 1943 and joined the Navy immediately serving in the Pacific area during WWII. He learned his trade in the Navy, applied to Ohio State and was accepted but chose to work for Ashland Petroleum Co. in river transportation. In 1956, he was the chief engineer of the largest towboat ever seen in that era. He held U.S. Coast Guard licenses, tankers license and ended his career in Baton Rouge as supervisor of marine repairs for Ashland Oil’s Marine Transportation Department.

Ralph enjoyed woodworking, repairing cars his wife and son provided for him and solving mechanical problems. As a member of the trustees at First United Methodist Church in Ashland and Jefferson United Methodist Church in Baton Rouge, he volunteered numerous hours repairing and analyzing mechanical problems within the church’s systems. He loved working with the youth in the church and joining them in activities gave him much pleasure before he lost his sight. He enjoyed outdoor activities of fishing, water sports, camping and occasional hunting.

Ralph was a member of the Propeller Club in Baton Rouge, American Legion Post No. 101593832 in St. Gabriel, La., and a was a Merchant Marine.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Elmer Davis and Mary Virginia Davis; his brother, Frank Davis and his sister, Lucille Davis Williams.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Lou White Davis; their son, Roger E. Davis and his wife Dr. Arden Dingle and their children, Addison Denise Davis and Amaris Devon Davis; and his loving nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, March 15, 2010 at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. Gene Pillow. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Burial Park.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that tokens of love could be made to Jefferson United Methodist Church, 10328 Jefferson Highway, Baton Rouge, LA 70809 noted “Davis Memorial/Capital Campaign” on check or VistaCare, 400 Franklin Road, Bldg. 400, Suite 200, Mariettta, GA 30067 and noted “In memory of Ralph C. Larry Rayburn - 1951-2010

Larry Alfred Rayburn, 59, of Ashland, Ky., passed away Thursday, March 11, 2010 in Kingsbrook Lifecare Center.

Mr. Rayburn was born Feb. 20, 1951, in Ashland, a son of the late Alfred and Susie Hicks Rayburn.

Larry was the guy with the big heart, big feet and a big ear. He had a passion for broadway music and was an eternal optimist. Larry lived in Lexington, Ky., for many years where he worked at Best Buy before returning to Ashland where he spent the remaining part of his life surrounded by many dear friends at Kingsbrook Lifecare Center.

He was preceded in death by his partner, Jeffrey Griffith.

He is survived by one sister, Genie and her husband Joe Mayer of Houston, Texas; two nieces, Maggie Mayer and Boo Rayburn Mayer, both of Houston; and a beloved friend, Corbie Stull of Russell, Ky.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. today, March 13, 2010 by Colonel James Edward Rayburn at Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum in Ashland.

Frances M. Baldridge - 1951-2010

Frances M. Baldridge, 58, of Culp Creek Road, Argillite, Ky., went to be with the Lord Thursday, March 11, 2010 in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell, Ky.

Mrs. Baldridge was born May 22, 1951, in Webbville, Ky., a daughter of Betty Stewart Skaggs of Webbville and the late John L. Skaggs.

Mrs. Baldridge was a hairdresser and operated Frances Beauty Shop and was a member of Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 1168 in Greenup, Ky.

She is survived by her husband, Norman Baldridge; two sons, John David (Katy) Hilton of Memphis, Tenn., and William Shannon Hilton of Ashland, Ky.; a stepson, Terry (Heather) Baldridge of Barbourville, W.Va.; two stepdaughters, Teresa Baldridge of Hawaii and Kathy (Stephen) Babbitt of Maryville, Ind.; a brother, Roger Dale Skaggs of Grayson, Ky.; a sister, Linda Skaggs of South Point, Ohio; two grandchildren and three stepgrandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, March 15, 2010 at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup by the Rev. Tom Jackson. Burial will be in Pierce Cemetery Culp Creek Road in Argillite, Ky.

Friends may call from noon until funeral time on Monday at the funeral home.



Martha M. Smith Rice - 1910-2010

Martha M. Smith Rice, 99, of Flatwoods, Ky., went home to be with her Savior on Friday, March 12, 2010 in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.

Mrs. Rice was born July 7, 1910, in Russell, Ky., a daughter of the late Kay Donaldson and Amerette Vanderhoof Smith.

She was also preceded in death by her loving husband, George H. Rice in 1989. Others who preceded her in death are two brothers, Frank and Thomas Smith; three sisters, Ruth Knipp, Maude Mehl and Margaret Smith; three sons-in-law, Vern Barnes, Vernon Greene, and Harold Mayo; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Rice was a member of Straight Creek Church of the Nazarene. She enjoyed quilting, sewing and playing keyboard with the Crisp Family Gospel Singers.

She is survived by seven daughters, Kathleen Barnes of Bellevue, Ohio, Reba (Bill) Short of Flatwoods, Lucille Greene of Flatwoods, Valdo Mayo of Flatwoods, Louella (Jim) Adkins of Columbus, Ohio, Emily (Jim) Lewis of Flatwoods and Joyce (Larry A.) Crisp of Ashland, Ky.; 21 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren and 23 great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods by Pastor Gary Salyers and Brother Randy Biggs. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday and one hour before the service Monday at the funeral home.



Lloyd Vernon Criswell - 1952-2010

Lloyd Vernon Criswell, 58, of Crystal River, Fla., formerly of Grayson, Ky., passed away Saturday, March 6 in Gainesville, Fla. He was immediately received and welcomed by his father, Ovelton Daniel Criswell; loving niece, Jennifer Lynn Criswell; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charles and Elsie Ingle.

Lloyd was born Jan. 11, 1952, in Logan, W.Va., son of Belva Williams Criswell and the late Ovelton Daniel Criswell.

Survivors along with his mother are his true love, his lamp in the lighthouse, ever watchful wife of 34 years, Bettyann Ingle Criswell; daughter, Lennetta Gail Thomas; son, Michael Vincent Manuel; grandson, Tyler Adam Caleb Thomas; two brothers, Roger Dale (Connie) and Daniel (Shirley) Criswell, both of Grayson; and several nieces and nephews.

On Saturday, the world lost a great man. “Chris” known by many a friend, sailed away to heaven from complications following extensive cancer surgery. Joining the Navy right out of high school, he proudly served his country for 22 years, where he retired as chief. He completed three tours around the world, encountering many conflicts, some bringing personal injury to himself. With the bravery of a true military hero, he completed the task laid before him, fighting for what he believed in. In this last battle, we called upon the Lord to protect him as he had so many others. God protected him from pain and took him away into his arms to save him from suffering. Sadly missed, never forgotten by those who survive him.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, March 15 at Lazear Funeral Home Chapel in Ashland by Pastor Keith Crum. Burial will follow in East Carter Memory Gardens where military graveside rites will be presented by Ceredo-Kenova American Legion Post 93.

Visitation will be Sunday, March 14 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to Lazear Funeral Home to help with his final expenses.



James Elliott Cole - 1934-2010

James Elliott Cole, 76, of Kenova, W.Va., died Wednesday, March 10, 2010 in Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House in Huntington, W.Va.

He was born Feb. 8, 1934, in Washington County, Ohio, a son of the late Herbert and Zennia Leota Webb Cole. He retired from Mansbach Metals. James was a U.S. Navy veteran having served during the Korean Conflict and was a member of American Legion Post No. 93 of Kenova, whose members will conduct graveside rites.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Donald Cole and one great-grandson, Khristian Sperry.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Ruth Caldwell Cole; two daughters and one son-in-law, Angela “Susie” and Ernest “Ernie” Willis and Rhonda Gail White, all of Kenova; two sons, James Kevin Cole and Dewayne Edward Cole, both of Kenova; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and a host of family and friends.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today, March 13, 2010 at Catlettsburg Church of God of which he was a member with Bishop Steve Mays officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery in Kenova.

Millard N. Mills, 83, of Ashland, died Friday in Kingsbrook Life Care Center in Ashland.

Doris Blevins - 1951-2010

Doris Claudale Blevins, 58, of Webbville, died March 5 in Columbus, Ohio.

She was born Nov. 28, 1951, in Columbus.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. today at Dry Fork Community Church in Webbville. Burial will be in Howard Cemetery in Webbville.

Friends may call at noon today at the church.

Shawn Sexton - 1984-2009

Shawn Douglas Sexton, 25, of Harrodsburg, formerly of Martin, died Nov. 30, 2009.

He was born Feb. 12, 1984, in Prestonsburg.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. today at Hall Funeral Home in Martin. Burial will be in Samons Cemetery in Martin.

Ronnie Perry

Ronnie Alan Perry, 47, of Hamilton, Ohio, formerly of West Liberty, died Thursday in West Chester Nursing & Rehabilitation in West Chester, Ohio.

His wife, Linda Jordan Perry, survives.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Sunday at Herald & Stewart & Halsey Funeral Home in West Liberty. Burial will be in Williams Cemetery in Lacy Creek.

Richard Evans - 1935-2010

Richard Allen Evans, 74, of Muses Mill, died Friday in Richmond.

He was born April 30, 1935, in Cincinnati.
