Avery Lee Stanley - 1939-2012

TITUSVILLE, FL — Mr. Avery Lee Stanley, age 73, of Titusville, Fla., formerly of Vanceburg, passed away Tuesday evening, Aug. 28, 2012, in Wuesthoff Hospice House in Rockledge, Fla.

Mr. Stanley was born Jan. 18, 1939, in Darwin, Va., a son of the late Creed and Ernie Dotson Stanley.

He graduated from Lewis County High School Class of 1957, attended University of Kentucky in 1962 and further graduated with his juris doctorate from University of Kentucky College of Law in 1965.

Mr. Stanley immediately began his law practice in Vanceburg upon graduation from law school until retirement in 2001. During those years in practice, he was the Commonwealth Attorney for the 20th Judicial Circuit for several years.

He was a former owner of WKKS radio station and was a founding member and served on the board of directors of the First National Bank of Lewis County. He was a 32nd degree Mason and member of the Stone City Masonic Lodge No. 963 F&AM. He was an active member and a past president of the Vanceburg Lions Club. He was also a former Lewis County Republican Party chairman serving as campaign manager for various state and local Republican candidates. Mr. Stanley was a member of the Park Avenue Baptist Church of Titusville.

He enjoyed spending time on his farm, fishing, golfing and spending time with his son and grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Larry Stanley, Elmer Stanley and Eugene Stanley.

Avery is survived by his son, Avery Lee Stanley II and his wife Holly of Crestview Hills; three grandchildren, Adeline Elizabeth Stanley, Avery Lee Stanley III and Chelsea Marie Stanley, all of Crestview Hills; and six sisters, Lucille Hale of Clintwood, Va., Clara Kamer and Norma Lewis, both of Vanceburg, Margie Moore of Quincy, Buna Horsley of Garrison, and Thelma Lawson of Richmond. He also leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss him.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 3, 2012, at Vanceburg Christian Church with Brother Tom Cox officiating. Burial will follow in the Waring Cemetery in Garrison.

Friends may visit from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012, at Dickerson Funeral Home, 110 West Second Street, Vanceburg, KY 41179 and after 10 a.m. Monday at the church. A Masonic service will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home by Stone City Lodge No. 963 F&AM..

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Vanceburg Christian Church, P.O. Box 37, Vanceburg, KY 41179.
