Claris Leota Childers

Claris Leota Childers, 92, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, at Heck Funeral Home in Milton, W.Va., with the Rev. Doug Spurlock officiating. Burial will be in Forest Memorial Park in Milton.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl W. Childers, and a daughter, Mary Jane Conley.

She is survived by her daughters, Leota Carol Clarke and Diana Gayle Gay; a grandson, Lon Wesley Conley; a granddaughter, Wendi Lee (Bryan) Ellis; and a great-granddaughter, Jennifer Renae Ellis, who is now 15 years old. Claris is also survived by her special friend and the light of her life, Bruce Billups, with whom she shared much love and laughter in her later years.

Claris loved gardening whether on the farm on Little Cabell Creek Road in West Virginia or selling vegetables at the Cannonsburg Greenhouse in Kentucky. She also knew how to prepare wonderful meals from the farm’s fare including specialties such as fresh strawberry shortcake, crispy corn bread and pumpkin pies. No one ever left her table hungry.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Jan. 15, 2010, at the funeral home.

Kermit Preston - 1925-2010

Kermit Preston, 84, of Worthington, Ky., died Jan. 13, 2010, in Oakmont Manor in Flatwoods, Ky.

He was born Feb. 25, 1925, in Johnson County, Ky., a son of the late Garland and Elizabeth Johnson Preston.

He was a retired conductor for the C&O; Railroad, a member of Kenwood Baptist Church, a World War II Army veteran and had a doctorate in theology.

Surviving are his wife, Lillian Ruth Dove Preston of Worthington; a daughter, Kerma Lynn (Kenny) Clark of Worthington; a sister, Mary Elizabeth Stepp of Bellefonte, Ky.; grandsons Kasey Clark, Jason Clark and Cory Clark; granddaughters Katie Clark and Kristen Wyscarver; great-grandsons, Brady Clark and Hayden Frazier; and great-granddaughters Grace Caroline Clark and Bristol Clark.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. today, Jan. 15, 2010, at Wright’s Funeral Home in Greenup, Ky., by Brother Dallas Sutton. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.

David J. Cantrell - 1981-2010

David Jay Cantrell, 28, of Greenup, Ky., went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010, in Grayson, Ky., from injuries he received in an automobile accident.

David was born Dec. 27, 1981, in Ashland, Ky., a son of Curtis and Paula Kay Cantrell Campbell of Greenup.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Kasie Jalynn Cantrell.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by three sisters, Amanda Kay (Billy) Jordan and Evelyn Chapman, both of Greenup, and Delores Johnson of Grayson; a special aunt, Teresa (Randy) Blevins of Greenup; his fiancée, Vonna Lynn Wilburn of Grayson; his fiancée’s parents, Mart and Rose Wilburn Jordan of Greenup; a niece; and several nephews, uncles, aunts and cousins.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010, at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup. Burial will be in Jordan Cemetery on Harvey Branch in Carter County, Ky.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday and an hour before services on Sunday at the funeral home.



Carolyn Troxler - 1958-2010

Carolyn Jane Beach Troxler, 51, of Greenup, went to be with Jesus on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky., surrounded by her family.

She was born Aug. 29, 1958, in Russell, Ky., a daughter of William Russell and Mary Jane Dale Beach of Greenup.

She was a 1976 graduate of Greenup County High School, a member of the House of Praise in Greenup and was a teacher’s aide at Wurtland Elementary School.

She is survived, along with her parents, by her husband, James Edward Troxler; a son, Jamathan Jabrae Troxler and his wife, Savannah, of Greenup; a daughter, Jamae Frances Troxler of Greenup; two brothers, Andre Pierre Beach and his wife, Kathy, of South Shore and David Russell Beach of Greenup; and a sister, Linda Jeanine Fitzpatrick of Greenup.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, at the House of Praise in Greenup by Brother Bernard Twinam. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery in Greenup.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m. today at Wright’s Funeral Home in Greenup and an hour before services Saturday at the church.

Henry Howard Sr. - 1924-2010

Henry Howard Sr., 85, of Big White Oak Road, York, Ky., went to be with his Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell, Ky.

Mr. Howard was born Feb. 10, 1924, in Greenup County, Ky., a son of the late Burns and Essie Howard.

Mr. Howard was retired from the Greenup County Road Department and Laborers Local 1445. He enjoyed gardening and helping his daughter at Imel’s Greenhouse. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Betty Christine Skaggs Howard, and three brothers, Hargest Howard, Arnett Howard and Winfield Scott Howard.

He is survived by two sons, Henry (Jewell) Howard Jr. of York and Benjamin (Emigedia) Howard of Jackson, Ohio; three daughters, Sherry (Marc Duncan) Moore of St. Louis, Mo., Pam (Kenny) Imel of Greenup, Ky., and Donna (David) Flocker of York; a sister, Nannie Manis of South Shore, Ky.; 12 grandchildren, Daphne, Justin, Sara, Rosalba, Kenton, Janna, Herman, Noe, Jennifer, Matthew, Shaun and Lovetta; and 10 great-grandchildren, Isaiah, Rylie, Sarah, McKenzie, Noah, Kayla, Kate, Macyn, Jonathan and Emma.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup by Pastor Shaun Howard. Burial will be in Howard Cemetery at York.

Marjorie Oppenheimer Holbrook - 1915-2010

Marjorie Oppenheimer Holbrook, 94, of Olive Hill, Ky., passed away Wednesday evening, Jan. 13, 2010, at her residence.

She was born Aug. 9, 1915, in Carter County, Ky., a daughter of the late Cecil and Ollie May Bailey Oppenheimer.

Marjorie was an owner/operator of Oppenheimer’s Salon in Olive Hill and had worked as a beautician for more than 39 years. She was also employed by the Human Resources Center in Grayson, Ky., for 12 years as a social worker. She was a Christian and a member of Olive Hill United Methodist Church, Order of Eastern Star and the Democratic Party and had attended two National Presidential Conventions.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 20 years, Tyler H. Holbrook; four brothers, Doval Oppenheimer, Paul Oppenheimer, Cecil Oppenheimer Jr. and Charles “Moes” Oppenheimer; and two sisters, Clarice Jarvis and Sara Gore.

Her survivors include three sisters, Lela Doris Fielding of Olive Hill, Maxine Friedman of Evanston, Ill., and Patricia Solomon of Dayton, Ohio. She also leaves several nieces, nephews and other family members and friends who will sadly miss her.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill with Brother Bob Burton officiating. Burial will be in Olive Hill Memorial Park.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. today, Jan. 15, 2010, and until time of the services Saturday at the funeral home.

Tom Mattingly, Bill Sartain, Greg DeHart, Mike Oppenheimer, Charles Michael Oppenheimer, John Friedman and Randy Oppenheimer will serve as pallbearers.

Helen Ruth Hall - 1928-2010

Helen Ruth Hall, 81, of Hitchins, went to be with her Lord on Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010, in Wurtland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born April 26, 1928, in Grayson, Ky., a daughter of the late Willie and Elizabeth Meadows Back. She attended Hitchins Freewill Baptist Church and was a homemaker. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harold Hall, in 1984; brothers L.D. Hall, Riley Hall, Bruce Hall, Cecil Hall and Howard Hall; and two sisters, Naomi Barker and Ersel Dickerson Bradley.

She is survived by a son, Howard W. Hall of Hitchins; a daughter, Peggy Prichard of Hitchins; two brothers, Warnie Hall of Hitchins and Harlan Douglas Hall of Grayson; six grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at noon Saturday at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson by Keith Hill, minister. Burial will be in East Carter County Memory Gardens.

David Paul Keaton - 1934-2010

David Paul Keaton, 75, of Olive Hill, Ky., passed away Thursday morning, Jan. 14, 2010, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 12, 1934, in Carter County, Ky., a son of the late James Harrison and Myrtle Holbrook Keaton.

David was a former employee of the Empire Detroit Steel Mill in Mansfield, Ohio. He served his country with the United States Army and was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Estep; three brothers, James C. Keaton, Buford Ray Keaton and Willie Lee Keaton; and three sisters, Thelma Mosier, Ina Pearl Burton and Elizabeth Geary.

He is survived by a very special lady, Betty Gillam; several nieces and nephews; and other extended family members and friends who will sadly miss him.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010, at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill with Brother Rex Sagraves and Brother Jim Holbrook officiating. Burial will be in Thompson Cemetery on Dry Branch Road in Olive Hill.

Friends may after 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, and until services Sunday at the funeral home.

Military graveside rites will be by Olive Hill American Legion Post 138.

Rick Conn, Wes Conn, Dwight Keaton, Scott Keaton, Doug Brown, Rocky Geary and Donnie Mosier will serve as pallbearers. Louie Keaton, Lowell Erwin, Brian Simpson, Buster Mosier and Phillip Bradley will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Richard Clark - 1949-2010

Richard Lee Clark, 60, of Grayson, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010, following an extended illness.

Richard was born May 10, 1949, in Grayson, Ky., to the late Horace Clyde and Allene Keffer Clark. Richard proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He worked as a boilermaker, farmer and park ranger at Carter Caves State Resort Park.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Clark.

Survivors include his loving wife of 18 years, Dawna Janette “Jan” Crisp Clark of Grayson; a sister-in-law, Bonnie Clark Sammons, widow of Jack Clark; siblings Betty Feltrop and her husband, Bernard, of Henderson, Ky., Minnie Harper and her husband, Chester, of Grayson, Loretta Evans of Bettendorf, Iowa, Mary K. Lehman of Florence, Ariz., Don Clark and his wife, Joyce, of Greenville, S.C., and Patricia Laughlan of Maquoketa, Iowa; and a host of extended family and friends.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, at Clark Family Cemetery on Stinson Road in Carter County, Ky., by the Rev. Mike Harper.

John Cooksey - 1926-2010

John D. Cooksey, 83, of Ashland, died Thursday in Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility.

He was born April 21, 1926.

There will be no funeral service. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.

Fern Geneva Burchett Cooper, 95, of Corydon, Ind., formerly of Olive Hill, died Tuesday in Corydon.

She was born Nov. 15, 1914, in Carter County.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Christian Church in Olive Hill. Burial will be in Garvin Ridge Cemetery in Olive Hill.

Dorothy Twinam Slack, 96, of Huntington, widow of Charles Francis Slack, died Thursday in Heritage Center in Huntington.
