Gurney A. Johnson 1947-2012

CATLETTSBURG — Gurney Arden Johnson, 64, of Ashland, formerly of Catlettsburg, passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2012, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

Born July 18, 1947, in Kenova, W.Va., he was the son of the late John and Goldie Sprouse Johnson.

He was a graduate of Thomas R. Brown High School, the University of Kentucky and Salmon P. Chase School of Law at Northern Kentucky University. He practiced law in Catlettsburg for 32 years and also served as Catlettsburg’s attorney and mayor. He was the domestic relations commissioner of Boyd County and assistant county attorney for Boyd and Carter counties. He was a member of the Catlettsburg Elks and attended Holy Family and Calvary Episcopal churches.

Survivors include his wife, Deborah Price Johnson; a daughter, Erika Layne of Catlettsburg; grandsons Kaleb Layne and Kolten Layne, both of Catlettsburg; a sister, Barbara Perdue of Knoxville, Tenn.; and his beloved dachshunds, Jack and Lily.

In keeping with his wishes, there will be no visitation. A memorial service will be at a later date.

Neal Funeral Home in Catlettsburg is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to AARF (Ashland Animal Rescue Fund) or a church of choice.
