Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home —
Glenwood G. Young, 60, of Catlettsburg, passed away Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, in Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison, Ind.
Mr. Young was born Sept. 28, 1952, in Drums, Pa., a son of the late Alfred and Irene Rinehimer Young.
Glen earned his bachelor’s degree in environmental resources management from Penn State. He retired from Verizon in 2007 and currently was manager of the Greenup County Environmental Commission. He was a member of the Boyd County Extension Council, vice chairman of the Boyd County Extension Agriculture Advisory Council, a member of the Boyd County Youth Livestock Committee, co-superintendent of the Boyd County Fair Youth Livestock Show-Beef Department, a member of the Boyd County Conservation District Board, the Boyd County Master Gardener Program, where he earned his Silver Trowel, the Kentucky Master Cattlemen, Kentucky Master Grazer, the Kentucky and American Forage and Grasslands Council and the Highlands Beef Cattle Association. He was a participant of the Heritage Harvest Tour, a Boyd County 4-H supporter, a participant of the Boyd County and University of Kentucky cooperative extension services on multiple projects, an Atrium volunteer with Mike Beck at the Huntington Museum of Art, a member of the Boyd County High School Vo-Ag Advisory Committee, a Kentucky colonel, president of the Jaycee Senate, active in Ashland Area Jaycees and a founding member of the Carter County Antique Farm Machinery Club. Glen was a member of Cannonsburg Trinity United Methodist Church where he was chairman of the board of trustees. As you can see, he was a man who gave selflessly to his community.
Glen came from a family of farmers in Pennsylvania and he thoroughly loved spending time on his tractors and with his animals. He enjoyed chasing trains with his GARFing buddy Brad, but above all else he loved his family.
Glenwood is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Diane Thomas Young; their daughter, Lauren Young at home, (Lauren’s boyfriend, Brad Swartz); a brother, Jim Young of Drums; his mother-in-law, Dolores Thomas of Madison; and nieces and nephew Mark, Jennifer, Matt, Pat, Emily, Luke, Quinn and Julia.
Funeral services for Mr. Young will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home on Panola Street in Catlettsburg. Pastor Jim Barrett will officiate. Final rest will be in Catlettsburg Cemetery.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
