James Richard Garthee Sr., 91, of Greenup, passed away Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell.
He was born Oct. 13, 1921, in Greenup County, to the late Clarence and Hattie Johnson-Garthee.
Mr. Garthee was a 1939 graduate of Greenup Independent School and was a veteran of the U.S. States Army having served honorably during World War II as a staff sergeant of the 1st Calvary Division, Troop C, 7th Regiment. James was a pipefitter with Local 248 of Ashland and was an original member of the FIVCO Area Development District. He was a longtime member of Greenup Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder.
He leaves behind a devoted and caring family to mourn his passing, including his loving wife of 72 years, Florene Cox-Garthee of Greenup; three children and their spouses, James R. and Christie Garthee Jr. of Greenup, Susan A. and Herb Doty of Russell and Gary L. and Jamie Garthee of Greenup; a brother, Cleo Lee Garthee of Lloyd; a sister, Garnett Louise Bowen of Greenup; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren, all of whom will miss him dearly.
Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods has been entrusted to handle funeral services at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, at Greenup Presbyterian Church, 208 W. Main St., by the Rev. Jack Edwards. Burial will be in Brick Union Cemetery.
Visitation for family and friends will be after 11 a.m. Thursday at the church.
At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Greenup Presbyterian Church.
