Jesse Warren Porter - 1927-2013

FLATWOODS — Jesse Warren Porter, 85, husband of JoAnne Kelly Porter of Flatwoods, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013.

Warren was born Nov. 26, 1927, in Westwood, to the late Oscar and Laura Ethel Robinson Porter.

During World War II, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps. After working as an assistant manager for various J.C. Penney stores, he accepted a position at Armco Steel where he later retired from the Rigger Department. He received a bachelor’s degree from Taylor University and worked toward a master’s degree at the University of Kentucky. He was a member of the United Steelworkers and was a long-standing member of Westwood Wesleyan Church where he faithfully served as a secretary/treasurer, Sunday school superintendent, Sunday school teacher and song leader.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Morris Porter, and a sister, Amanda Pauline Little.

Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, JoAnne Kelly Porter of Flatwoods; three sons Dr. Stephen Warren Porter and his wife, Katherine, of Chesapeake, Va., Dr. Jesse Mark Porter and his wife, Valerie, of Wurtland and David Porter of Ashland; two daughters, Dr. Laura Anne Kimble and her husband, Nathan, of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Dr. Jill Elizabeth Keaton and her husband, Dr. Andy Keaton, of Pikeville; two sisters, Evelyn Webb of Columbus, Ohio, and Virginia Edna Faulkner of Cynthiana; 13 grandchildren, Ethan Warren Porter, Seth Bernard Porter, Jesse Warren Porter II, Gene David Porter, Mark Andrew Porter, Allison Marie Porter, Michael Tyler Kimble, Emily Anne Keaton, Paul Emerson Keaton II, David Kelly Porter, Jacob Daniel Sanford Porter, Joseph Bryan Porter and Kyle Hylton Porter; and numerous extended family and friends.

Funeral services will be at noon Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, by Pastor Philip Zimmerman at Westwood Wesleyan Church. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods. Military services will be by Kenova American Legion Post 93.  

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood and an hour before services Saturday at the church.
