The Raceland-Worthington High School Spanish Honor Society thanks everyone who assisted the club in organizing the 2013 Spanish Honor Society Convention. It’s been a learning experience for the club to plan an event with over 200 students attending. The surrounding community has been an amazing help.
First, the club thanks Moore Street Tabernacle in Ashland for its generous donations. We also thank Raceland-Worthington Superintendent Larry Coldiron, the Board of Education, and Raceland Principal Mickey Dixon, and Vice Principal Tom Collins.
Next, we thank Cannonsburg Walmart, Grace Methodist Church, and Ram’s Dairy Bar for their help. We give a big shout out to DSI for the awesome shirts. We thank the Raceland fire department and police department for keeping the incoming students safe.
This event could not have been possible without the efforts of all of the parents and volunteers who have assisted in the planning of the convention.
Kendall Baker, Secretary, RWHS Spanish Honor Society

On behalf of the family of Laura Katherine (Houck) Dalton, we thank the staff of Kingsbrook Life Care Center which cared for our mother for eight years.
Mom passed away on Feb. 11, and we thank everyone who cared for her so wonderfully and personally. During the last five days of her life, we were all so graciously seen to our every need.
We are so grateful for such a place as Kingsbrook Life Care Center.

On the increase
It’s certainly good news that a new report by Kentucky’s Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet has found the economic impact of tourism grew by 5.2 percent in eastern Kentucky in 2012, outpacing the overall statewide growth rate. However, we would be more excited bout the report if we had more confidence in how tourism spending is calculated by state government.

After the crash
Like thousands of other Kentuckians, we remember well May 14, 1988, when a drunken driver traveling the wrong way on Interstate 71 near Carrollton struck a church bus returning home to Radcliff after day at King’s Island, causing one of he most deadly vehicle accidents in this nation’s history. The horrific crash killed 27, many of them teenagers, and injured 34 others.

If you live in Boyd and Lawrence counties and are thinking of burning trash, wood, leaves or other debris outdoors, here’s a word of advice: Don’t even think about lighting that match. If you do, it could cost you dearly.

Booming times
Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergran Grimes has launched a statewide tour to gauge public support for allowing more voters to cast their ballots before Election Day. While other states have enacted laws to allow early voting, the biggest obstacle to the proposal in Kentucky is the state’s history of widespread voter fraud.
