Massey shareholders to vote on board, resolutions

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — It's time for Massey Energy shareholders to vote on a pair of environmental measures and the re-election of Ohio State University President Gordon Gee to the Richmond, Va.-based coal producer's board.

Massey wants Gee re-elected Tuesday. Environmentalists are pushing him to resign over Massey's use of mountaintop removal mining, which involves blasting away ridgelines to expose multiple coal seams.

Massey wants shareholders to defeat the environmental measures. One calls for reports on how it's responding to pressure to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from burning coal. The other seeks a report on Massey's progress toward implementing a settlement of Clean Water Act violations with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Massey operates mines in West Virginia, Kentucky and Virginia.
