Environmental groups want role in WVa park case

LOGAN, W.Va. — Three environmental groups and a former state parks chief want a role in an ongoing court case over natural gas drilling at Chief Logan State Park.

The West Virginia Highlands Conservancy, the Friends of Blackwater, the Sierra Club and former state parks chief Cordie Hudkins have asked Logan Circuit Judge Roger Perry to allow them to intervene.

In June, Perry overturned a state denial of drilling permits for nearly three dozen new gas wells sought by Houston-based Cabot Oil & Gas Corp.

The state Department of Environmental Protection has said it will appeal, but has not yet done so.

The environmental groups and Hudkins want Perry to reconsider his ruling, based on what they say is new information.
