WVa PSC approves 66-turbine wind farm

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state Public Service Commission has approved the construction of a 66-turbine wind farm in Grant County.

AES New Creek must first meet several conditions before it can begin construction on the $308 million project on New Creek Mountain.

In an order issued Wednesday, the commission said AES must complete an endangered-species study, among other actions, before going forward.

The wind farm is the Arlington, Va.-based power company's second project approved by the commission.

A battle over AES's proposal to build a 65-turbine wind farm on Laurel Mountain in Barbour and Randolph counties went all the way to the state Supreme Court. In June the court refused to interfere with the PSC's decision to authorize the project.
