FRANKFORT — A new report from the state Justice and Public Safety Cabinet says prescriptions for controlled substances are up in all but two of Kentucky's 120 counties.
The data covers prescriptions dispensed between 2005 and 2007 and is based on numbers from an electronic reporting system. According to the report released Wednesday, five counties — Bell, Clinton, Magoffin, Owsley and Whitley — all averaged more than four prescriptions for controlled substances per resident.
Van Ingram, director of office of drug control policy, says the more prescription drugs dispensed, the greater the chances are for abuse.
Ingram says Crittenden and Union counties in the western part of the state are the only two that did not see an increase.
