HENDERSON, Ky. — Two environmental groups are suing the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency over three proposed Kentucky power plants.
The Sierra Club and Evansville, Ind.-based Valley Watch say the government agency failed in its duty to curb air pollution by halting the progress of the projects. The plants named in the suit are the Cash Creek coal gasification plant in Henderson; Peabody and ConocoPhillip's NewGas coal gasification project in Muhlenberg County; and East Kentucky Power's Smith 1 plant in Clark County.
The Gleaner in Henderson reports that the suit was filed this week in Washington.
It says the plants would be constructed in areas the EPA has "acknowledged does not meet Clear Air Act requirements."
EPA spokeswoman Cathy Milbourn did not return an e-mail message seeking comment Friday.
