Black History Month:

‰Friday — An exhibit of works by local artist Jerry Johnson will open on First Friday and continue through February.

‰Saturday, 7 p.m. — “A Night at the Apollo,” Paramount Arts Center. Admission: $5 for adults, $1 for children.

‰Feb. 12, 7 p.m. — Gospel Night 2009, with performances by local gospel choirs, the event will be hosted by Boyd County High School’s Celebration Club. Free admission.

‰Feb. 16, 7 p.m. — Marshall University’s African Drumming and Dance Ensemble will give a free performance.

‰Feb. 21 — “Mardi Gras Madness,” a fundraiser slated at the Bellefonte Pavilion. Cocktails will be served at 6:30 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. Casino and dance floor open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $125 per person.

Children’s classes

‰Saturdays, 1 to 3 p.m. — Education Gallery, elementary-age children. Admission is free.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

PAINTED COW GALLERY

Studio home for the Lawrence County Arts Council, 103 S. Main St., Louisa. The gallery has a wide diversity of fine hand-made artwork on display and for sale from artists of the Tri-State and beyond.

Commissioned artists are available for specific art work.

The gallery is dedicating this month for the “LOVE OF ART” and has a wide diversity of fine hand-made artwork including drawings, paintings, photography, abstract sculptures, quilts, handmade jewelry, books from local authors/artists, note cards, decorative painted juvenile furniture, art dolls, etc. all on display and for sale from artists of the Tri-State and beyond.

Tuesdays — Artists Day. Bring your own supplies (except oils) and for $5, spend the day creating with other artists. Drawing and watercolor lessons are also available.

Greg Painter is now exclusive to the gallery, come in and see all his new artwork both in acrylic and watercolor.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday hours from noon to 4 p.m.

THE PENDLETON

ART CENTER

Join us at the Pendleton for a beach party, valentine shopping and much more on Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. during Ashland's Downtown First Friday Art Walk. Many artists will also be in their studios on Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m.

Cathie Lambeau, jeweler and acrylic artist, of Studio 137 is artist of the month for February.

The Pendleton Art Center at 1537-1539 Winchester Ave., Ashland, houses the working and retail sale studios of artists and craftsmen from the Tri-State Area with a wide range of talents.

The Left Bank Café is open during the hours of 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and during First Friday and Second Look Saturday events. (606) 325-3815. The Thursday before First Friday each month is open mic night. Singers, storytellers, poets, comedians, and others are invited to perform.
