BANANA TREE STUDIOS

The studio offers class instructions in ceramics, watercolors and oils.

All classes are open to beginners as well as advanced students. Classes are for eight weeks, meeting once a week for 21/2 hours. There must be five students registered for the class. Cost is $110.

Gallery hours are Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. or by appointment at 121 E. Electric Ave., Flemingsburg.

Workshops:

DOODLES STUDIO & GALLERY

‰Paper Mosaic class is $65 including 6”X6” canvas or mirror frame, craft knife, decoupage medium and dimensional paint as well as six to eight class hours of instruction to be done in one day.

‰Traditional Mosaic class are $110, which includes mirror frame, tile nippers, safety glasses, adhesive and six class hours of instruction.

The gallery is at 101 East Water St., Flemingsburg; open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., closed from 1 to 2 p.m. for lunch.

HIGHLANDS MUSEUM and

DISCOVERY CENTER

First Friday — School Daze opens. Newly renovated one-room schoolhouse reopens with free admission from 5 to 8 p.m.

Through May 15, Fridays, 12:45 to 2:15 p.m. — Every Child Is An Artist. Preschool art playgroup for children and their caregiver. Includes storytime, art activity and playtime in the Discovery Center. $10 per session. Walk-ins welcome or call to register.

‰Through May — Student Art Show. Winners will be selected from the March Discovery Workshop, Tangrams, Geoboards and Quilt Squares. The show will continue through May 9.

Exhibits

‰Through May 24 — “Slightly Unbalanced,” an exhibition of works by contemporary artists that focuses on the issue of psychological neurosis and its presence in much of today’s art.

‰Through Oct. 18 — “Who’s Who in the Vault: Portraits from the Permanent Collection.”

MUSEUM

Through May 31 — “The Original Silver’s Circus: The Art of Sonny King.”

June 6, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. — A day in the country folk art fair.

L STYLE

Potters’ Loft

Registration has begun for an eight-week wheel thrown pottery classes with instructor Bill Meadows beginning either Monday May 11 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. or Tuesday, May 12 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Classes will be in the Potters’ Loft at the L Style Salon, 1514 Winchester Avenue. Each student will work on their own wheel. All skill levels from beginners to advance are welcome.

The Potters’ loft will be open First Friday for additional information on classes and for the public to view students work and for students to work on their wheel.

PAINTED COW GALLERY

Studio home for the Lawrence County Arts Council in downtown Louisa, 103 S. Main Cross St. (across the street from the Lawrence County Court House). (606) 638-1313.

Gallery hours; Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday hours noon until 4 p.m.

The gallery is an official donation site for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life Walk for Louisa. Three local artists have donated artwork to benefit the relay. Virginia Dees donated a queen size quilt in shades of pink for breast cancer awareness; Maureen Dosier donated an abstract acrylic painting, “For the Love of Art,” with its primary colors of pinks; and Sandy Stark donated a full size “Split Rail Fence” pattern quilt, which is in shades of purple for cancer survivors. The first two donations are on display at the gallery and the third is on display at the Lawrence County Extension Office. All bids will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

The gallery offers a wide variety of artwork including drawings, paintings, pastels, sculptures, quilts, hand made jewelry, instruments, art dolls and handpainted decorative furniture, and much more.

Every Tuesday is Artist’s Day, bring your own supplies (except oils and clay) and spend the day creating with other artists for a small fee.

Everyone’s welcome to make a quick trip to Louisa and enjoy the new artwork in the gallery.



THE PENDLETON

ART CENTER

‰First Friday, 5 to 9 p.m. and Second-Look Saturday, 2 to 5 p.m. — Shop at the Pendleton. Art for Mothers Day, graduation and gift ideas for everyone on your list.

Alladins Art Gallery will be showing “The Art of Ashland,” including scenes depicting the city by several Pendleton artists.

The Pendleton Art Center at 1537-1539 Winchester Ave., Ashland, houses the working and retail sale studios of artists and craftsmen from the Tri-State Area with a wide range of talents. Melanie Osborne, oil painter and muralist, from studio 106, is the artist for the month of May.

All studios are open on First Friday each month from 5 to 9 p.m.
