ASHLAND —
A retired city fire department captain was stabbed Sunday evening in what police say was an apparent road-rage incident.
Patrick Steele, 52, of Ashland, was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center following the incident, which occurred about 7:45 p.m. in the 2500 block of Central Parkway.
The incident remains under investigation. However, according to Ashland Police Department Maj. Mark McDowell, what apparently happened was that Steele, who was riding a motorcycle, was angered by something Dewey Greear, 57, did and rode to Greear’s residence to confront him.
A fight ensued, during which Steele was stabbed with a pocket knife, McDowell said.
Greear was charged with first-degree assault in the incident. He wasn’t arrested, but was cited to court after complaining of a medical emergency, McDowell said. He was taken to King’s Daughters Medical Center.
Greear has filed against a cross-complaint against Steele for fourth-degree assault, which is under review by County Attorney Phillip Hedrick, McDowell said.
Fourth-degree assault is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail. First-degree assault is a Class B felony that carries a 10- to 20-year prison sentence.
Steele was taken initially to KDMC before being transferred to St. Mary’s, McDowell said.

19-year-old launching one-man food drive, ‘Cans for a Cause’
Never accuse Aaron Hannah of not being ambitious and failing to set high goals for himself.
Later this month, Hannah, a 19-year-old 2012 graduate of Raceland-Worthington High School, will launch what is essentially a one-man food drive. His goal: to collect at least 10,000 pounds of canned food for River Cities Harvest to distribute to local nonprofits and churches that help feed the hungry.
Hannah, who just completed his freshman year as a Bonner Scholar at Berea College, said scholars are encouraged, but not required, to do community projects designed to help the needy. - Westwood man charged with attempted murder
