RUSSELL — A woman was killed in an early-morning house fire in Russell.
The blaze was reported just after 2 a.m. in a residence at 1597 Diederich Blvd., near the Russell Fraternal Order of Police Lodge. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene about 6 a.m. by Greenup County Coroner Neil Wright.
The woman's name was being withheld pending notification of family members. Wright said it would likely be Friday before it was released. However, other sources identified her as Faye McKenzie, 75.
The woman's body was sent to the state Medical Examiner's Office in Frankfort for an autopsy. Wright said she appeared to have died of smoke inhalation, and that nothing about her death appeared suspicious.
Traffic on Diederich Boulevard was shut down for several hours while firefighters battled the blaze. The Russell Fire Department was assisted by firefighters from Worthington, Raceland and Westwood.
The cause of the fire wasn't immediately known.
