MOREHEAD —
Two volunteer firefighters were released Sunday afternoon from St. Claire Medical Center following a fire at Morehead State University.
Fire Chief Jerry Bowen of the Hayes Crossing-Haldeman Fire Department said David Burton and Stephen Bolton were treated for bruises and other minor injuries after a brick wall collapsed and pinned them against a metal railing during the blaze at MSU’s Downing Hall.
Bolton also suffered a dislocated knee.
Bowen said three other members of his crew – Kenny Adkins, Brandon Gray and Phillip Cox – were examined at the hospital as a precaution.
All five were struck by the falling debris when part of the roof collapsed and pushed out the front wall on the west wing.
“It was the kind of thing that can happen in a fire,” Bowen said. “Our men were doing what they are trained to do when the fall came down without warning. It could have been much worse.”
The chief said all five firemen are “strong, young men” but that Burton and Bolton might miss a couple of days of work to recuperate.
The Hayes Crossing-Haldeman firemen responded to a call for mutual aid from the Morehead Fire Department after the blaze was discovered about 7 a.m. Sunday.
No other injuries were reported in the fire which destroyed about half of the building which is scheduled for demolition later this year.
Built in 1967 as a residence hall for student-athletes, the two-story facility was being used for offices by two MSU support units and by three area police agencies.
An MSU spokesperson said Sunday that no damage estimate was available.

Robert Wayne Cox, 42, of Lanesville, Ind., formerly of Ashland, went to be with the Lord on May 15, 2013, in Lanesville, as a result of an automobile accident. He was born on Jan. 6, 1971, in Ashland to Charles Cox of Pottstown, Pa., and Anna Jean Stewart Brown of Ashland.
