Boy hit by car, flown to hospital

ASHLAND — A 12-year-old boy was flown to Cabell Huntington Hospital after being hit by a car while skateboarding across the street on Wednesday evening on 29th Street, according to the Ashland Police Department.

The accident happened around 6:30 p.m. near the Hughes 29th Street BP gas station and food mart.

There was no word on his condition but an Ashland police officer at the scene said he was talking to paramedics when they arrived. The child had some head injuries from hitting the windshield and also landed hard on his hip, according to an Ashland firefighter.

One witness said his face appeared to be bloody from the accident.

Maj. Mark McDowell of the Ashland Police Department described the accident as a “pedestrian collision. The boy was struck by the vehicle as he was crossing the road coming from Junior Food Mart. He rolled up on the hood and his head struck the windshield.”

McDowell said they flew him to the hospital more for precautionary reasons. The boy never lost consciousness, he said.

McDowell said the area is a dangerous one because of the heavy foot traffic created from the food mart.

Ashland police and Ashland firefighters responded to the scene. The accident is still under investigation.
