Boyfriend charged with murder in Morehead

MOREHEAD — Casey R. Shay, 26, of Morehead, was arrested Thursday afternoon and charged with murder after police found the body of his girlfriend, Cassandra (Cassie) Owens, 21, in the mobile home they shared in East Morehead with their 3-year-old daughter, according to The Morehead News.

The child was not harmed and is in the custody of a grandparent, police said.

Rowan County Coroner John Northcutt pronounced the woman dead shortly before 4:30 p.m. of an apparent gunshot wound to the head.

The body was taken to the state medical examiner’s office in Frankfort for an autopsy. Northcutt said the shooting had occurred at least a day earlier.

Morehead police said Shay turned himself in at the Rowan County Detention Center on Thursday afternoon, saying he had killed his girlfriend the day before.

An automatic pistol believed to be the murder weapon was recovered from a Morehead pawn shop.

Shay is being held in the Rowan County Detention Center without bond.
